Uncertain about Namiki Emperor / #50 Urushi

I did not, @Al-Bajaa, though every once in a while I go and drool at it.  I think the advice others gave about trying one before buying it was wise, difficult though it was to hear; and since I won't be within range of one for another couple of months at least, I still have no idea whether it would fit my hand.  Besides, I just spend my entire Namiki budget on bookshelves.

How close are you to buying one?

I am still on the fence. I have a Yukari Royale on the way, I am hoping that will put an end to the madness.

I think it was the Yukari Royale that incited my madness.  It is such a glorious pen; and I thought if it was that fabulous, the #50 Urushi would be even more so.  I hope you will let us all know!

I received my Namiki #20 and it is a glorious pen. I think that this is as big as I would go, it’s a hefty and girthy pen but nevertheless quite comfortable. My only experience being with the Yukari, this fine nib is slightly wetter and a joy to use.

Would I purchase a Namiki #50? Probably not, unless I stumble upon a great deal.  A Namiki Emperor? If funds permit, possibly. The caricatural size of the Emperor makes  more sense in my mind when you are showcasing maki-e artistry. For daily use, I think I made the right choice with the #20.

Hope this is helpful.

That is too helpful. 😉😁

I think I need to put an end to my circling (like the moth and the lamp) and test hold one in a shop this month.

It is possible that I end like the moth.

I am so glad you are pleased with it!  It really is glorious, isn't it?

FWIW, I'm doing the reverse.  I enjoy my emperor so much I'm a yuukari to take w/ me.  My Emperor is a broad and the yuukari is a medium so it won't be a straight comparison.  I actually forget how large the emperor is unless I have it next to another pen.

Well, curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back. I had to try out an Emperor for size and received it today in Vermillion.

It is a great pen and ergonomic despite the size. I just let the weight of the pen do the work and use a looser grip. The fine-medium nib is considerably wetter than my Yukari fines.

The madness will stop there for now.

Here is a family photo.
