Platinum pen in solid platinum - really?

It is mentioned that this be a pen in solid platinum.

Is that true? I didn't find anything on the web. A single-piece LE? Not true?

I don't know about the pen model you showed in the image, but the more expensive and ‘exclusive’ variant of the Platinum #3776 Century ‘The Prime‘ 100th anniversary limited edition pen did have a solid platinum body (barrel, cap, and crown).

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I found this in FPoJ, page 311. From the look, it has the same clip design and end cap trim. Sections and Nibs look similar too.

Description mentioned " Luxury models with platinum cap and barrel were also available."

Thank you very much.

This is certainly the luxury model mentioned.

It is a pity that Japanese companies do not want/understand the power of an online museum.

Platinum is a fabulous metal for some things, but an entire pen barrel doesn't strike me as one of them... The weight would be impressive (read: way too heavy!) and any attempt to thin it down to reduce the weight and/or cost would run the risk of making it too thin to resist dents from normal use.

The all Pt models are certainly fascinating and valuable collectibles though!

Don't get it wrong. Platinum is just a little "heavier" than gold.

Additionally, if you make a pen from resin and add a thin tube of metal over it than you can name it solid gold or solid platinum or Sterling silver - see the Montblanc Solitaires. Look at their weight, it is just something in the 40 grams.

The Platinum 100th anniversary Platinum pen is only 62g. They didn't use a lot of platinum, IMO.

My Waldmann 100th anniversary pen weighs 82g and has 66g silver in it - now, this is solid.

Platinum may only have a slightly higher density in its elemental form, but in practice it's much heavier, since most platinum used in jewelry (and pens) is 900 or 950 purity (with the additional 5-10% being iridium[22] or ruthenium[12], which are denser than copper and silver, the common alloying metals used in yellow gold), while it's very uncommon to see gold used above 750 purity in an item that needs any mechanical strength (and most "solid" gold pen barrels are 585).

And yes, I'm aware that in some parts of the world 22k and even 24k gold are used in jewelry, but those items can be bent out of shape with one's bare fingers, unless the item is exceptionally thick... pen barrels in 999 purity gold would likely last less than a day of careful use before they had serious dents.

For reference, "only" 62g is the weight of a 3" bladed back-lock pocket knife... a steel tool used for much more strenuous tasks than a pen (physically at least). I prefer my pens in the sub 20g range, with "heavy" ones around 30g being tolerable if the overall design is good enough to justify putting up with the extra weight.

Honestly, as @mke pointed out, an overlay of platinum or high purity gold on a base metal, ebonite or plastic barrel/cap would be the only sensible way to employ those metals in a daily use pen ...but then, any pen made with them would be a luxury item and when have luxury items followed the dictates of practicality? 😉

The solid silver version is a regular production pen. I have never seen this solid platinum version. It must run in the 10s of thousands.

I think you're reading it wrong. Platinum Pen has already stated what the weight of the pen is:

Nibsmith.com also puts the weight of the Platinum #3776 Century Bourgogne fountain pen (with rhodium trim) at 1.4lbs.

Correct. I had another look at the website. The weight capped is shown as 62g

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
