New Solitaire Released

Uncial

Recommended Posts

Montblanc have released the new burgundy gradient lacquer solitaire. It looks quite special - at least, to my eyes. I love the burgundy pens and this adds something very special to that colour line that really celebrates it. It appeared on MB's own websites shortly after Christmas and you can see pictures of it there.....because we can't possibly put pictures here to help them advertise to potential buyers.

The lacquer looks very well done with champaigne gold accents. Sadly the snow peak is standard and not a MOP one. The pen comes in two types; normal nibbed and a calligraphy nib. It also appears to be quite limited with the normal nibbed ones limited to 1400 units and the calligraphy to 700 units, however this was info from online that doesn't seem to appear on MB's website, but it wouldn't be the first time MB have seriously limited a solitaire and just not bothered to mention it. It's been a very long time coming out and when I saw a preview of al the pens for 2021 this was really the only one that caught my eye.

~ @Uncial:

Thank you for posting this information.

I've passed it along to friends who might be interested in it.

it's odd, I looked again and there are two versions.. an additional 'flexible nib' variant, but both are labelled as 'calligraphy'. the 'flexible nib' variant has the calligraphy nib engraving, and the other one has the traditional 4810 nib. I'm thinking one of them is not really 'calligraphy'.

Just like the last edition (gold leaf) Montblanc calls the model „Calligraphy“ regardless of the nib option.

The Calligraphy model is available with both standard nibs and one flexible nib.

Actually I was hoping that this model would get the curved nib option 😞

cheers

The past edition of the Calligraphy Solitaire, the Gold Leaf, had a flexible medium bib, which I find somewhat less interesting for calligraphic purposes.

According to MB page description, in the new Calligraphy Solitaire, the “flexible nib allows a multitude of individual writing styles and line widths, which can range from extra fine (0.3 mm) to double broad (1.6 mm) depending on the pressure applied.” This means that the number 6 nib of the new Solitaire Burgundy Lacquer is a true extra-fine flexible, as it has the same specifications that MB indicated for the 149 Calligraphy, which many of us could prove quite exact.

It is an exciting news, which less many of us hope for the release of a “more or less standard” 146 with a flexible, extra-fine nib comparable to that of the 149 Calligraphy.

146 type; current Solitaire style. Slightly bigger than the regular resin 146

Seems to be the same size as the earlier 149 Calligrapbhy: per the MB pages both pens have have the following dimensions~ 146.6 X 15.7 mm. The weight though differs and the newer one is lighter by just under 10 gms- this is a bit of a puzzle for me

It seems the gold leaf solitaire has the same nib description, sadly.

I am still interested in seeing this in the flesh. It could be stunning, and a bit of flex is always welcome.

All else the same would a bigger nib perform better in calligraphy? For instance, number 6 nib and number 9 nib, both range from extra fine 0.3 mm to double broad 1.6 mm, which nib would you prefer the 6 or 9?

I think we're allowed to post a link if the pen is on the official website aren't we @Uncial ? I learnt at school to ask for forgiveness rather than permission so here goes..  Meisterstück Calligraphy Solitaire Burgundy Lacquer Flexible Nib - Fountain pens – Montblanc® GB

Think it looks lovely and being relatively new to FPN I am really intrigued as to how the nib would write, in general I really like the solitaire pens and this is especially tempting!

it is interesting that one picture shows the flexible nib graphics and the other is for the curved nib option!

I got lucky today, and had the opportunity to order one. There's a new MB brick-and-mortar shop across the street from my new office, and they're getting the one Burgundy Flex that's been allocated to the entire country. Now it has my name on it, with delivery expected in two to four weeks 🙂

I just tried, but they won't ship to Denmark, apparently. The European Montblanc sites don't feature this pen, so it must be a US exclusive.

Don't think so...

It was out on US website today, early morning.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
