Agatha repair?

Remedial penmanship

Recommended Posts

Howdy!

I have a beloved OB Agatha that I’ve let go dry and the silver has tarnished because… no matter the ink or how often flushed or cleaned, it seemed always a leak at the section threads, small but enough for reliably painted fingers.  I tend to hold the pen at the proximal end of the section or on the threads.  Would one send to Montblanc corporate or an independent in the US?  For older celluloid pens I’ve sent to Germany and Italy, this seems more of a possible plastic problem that could affect similar 146 or 149 models.  Anyone with a similar symptom or repair suggestion?

Never iron gall inked, usually either Montblanc, Diamine, Bungubox, or Sailor ink lines.

Thanks!

It is very likely that the only place where there will be replacement parts is Montblanc. Currently you will have to send it to My Jewellery Repair and they will send it to Montblanc for a quote. It might take a while...

Ask for a quote. Lately Montblanc asks a premium for repairing older limited edition pens. If they follow that road on your request it will be 400-700 US $. Unfortunately they don't seem to offer level 1 or 2 repairs anymore on the older editions anymore.

You could get in contact with Tom Westerich or Max Schrage. Very high quality repair and better value if they can help.

Cheers and good luck.

@Michael R. That’s good to know. Thank you for sharing. I always tell the boutique that if it’s going to be more than level 1 charge, they should let me know. They’ve always said that that’s their practice as well. Does what you mentioned apply to just limited editions, or special editions too? Thank you!

Writers editions seem to fall into the ‘cost estimate’ category rather than level 1 or 2 service. I sent in a vermeil solitaire which fell into this category for a replacement of a gold/sliver plated part - replaced at cost, not within a service category.

@timo You are right! It clearly lists limited and special editions at "cost estimate". I had even used this chart recently but didn't pay attention to the bottom part. So I'd better not drop my Homer 😀!

I've seen someone quote the cost to repair an older Writers Edition by Montblanc and it wasn't that bad. It all depends on what parts are required. However, I don't believe that level 1 and 2 service prices are exactly the same for all models.

I think it depends on the pen and the parts. I think some parts are manufactured as required, especially on older models, so the cost can be slightly eye watering.

Given the value of the Agatha today, I would suggest sending it in to Montblanc.  If they break it, it's their problem.  If I break it, I get to send it to them for repair, only now its my problem and not theirs.   I like it when something is an SEP.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
