I broke down and bought a black stripe Myu, which came in today's mail, as the companion to the Murex I bought last year around this time. I can't help it, the integrated nib just makes me tingly.

I have bought one several years ago and I hope you will love yours as much as I love mine. It is probably the greatest little pen I have encountered so far.

Thank you! So far, I've only dipped it to make sure the nib was was okay (and it is), but I love its appearance and feel in the hand. The black stripe pattern has always called to me!

It does, doesn't it? Same for me. I was offered the black striped and the plain one at the same time (and at a very good price, too), but unfortunately I only had the money for one of them at the time. The decision was easy though. It just HAD to be the striped one. 🥰

Very nice!! Does the silver make it significantly different in balance than other Elites?

(We're Pilot pocket pen twinsies today: I broke down and bought a black stripe Myu, which came in today's mail, as the companion to the Murex I bought last year around this time. I can't help it, the integrated nib just makes me tingly.)

I don’t know yet, I dipped it in Aka to see if I would like the pairing (the @USG method of trying out inks). I do have a modern burgundy Elite that I also haven’t inked yet so maybe I will do a comparison with cartridges.

I love my Myu, mine is the all stainless version, that I bought from Nik Pang last summer when looking for a silver Elite. The striped ones are beautiful; I would love to find one someday, along with a Murex. Like you, I really enjoy integrated nibs- I have a Parker T1, 50, and hope to upgrade my Schon DSGN Pocket Six with a Monoc nib sometime.

Excellent choice. I have an etched cap Elite. It gives me issues. It will write after being inked. Then not too much later, it doesn’t want to write. It has a B nib. I hope yours is an excellent writer.

I remember your Elite, that’s too bad- it’s really cute, and B nibs aren’t common. I think there’s a particular glue or combination of glue and some sort of pad under the inlaid nib that Pilot uses that may be coming apart. There are a few things you can do: find instructions in the repair section on how to fix it- I remember someone doing this semi recently, email Pilot US and ask about repairs- I think they send them to Japan for repair, but am not sure about the cost, or see if there’s someone in our community here in the US that can fix it, either at a pen show or as a mail in.

Thank You, @basterma and @Ceramicist, for your lovely compliments.

That is just my cup of tea!

I think that they had a Namiki nib too, very envious.

Thank you (I often get a tinge of envy when on this site, so many beautiful pens)!  I think at some point most or all of Pilot’s higher end fountain pens were labeled Namiki for export to the US. My Silvern was labeled Namiki.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 30 currently inked pens:

A badly flawed pen that I regret selling was a Cross Verve with a Broad Namiki nib, similar in appearance to your Pilot.

I have been keeping an eye out for one of those, actually- those are really cool looking pens. What were the flaws?

Maybe this is a silly question, but do you use your T1? I considered one, once, but was made skittish by all the references to (if I recall correctly) the tendency of the tipping to explode if you even thought about dipping it in ink. Or something like that.

@Beechwood Why do you regret selling it?  I keep meaning to give my Verve a second chance but then get distracted by pens that DON'T get ink all over my hands (I don't know why *anyone* thought that 2-piece nib around the feed was a remotely good idea, but I only paid a buck or so for the pen).

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

ETA: @Penguincollector The problem with the Verve is that it's a fairly fat pan that one has to hold further up on the section than I'm used to, because of the two piece nib leaves a gap on the sides of the section.  And if you hold the pen too close to the bottom of the feed, you get ink all over your fingers while writing -- simply BECAUSE of the side gaps around the feed.  Apparently, there was some major party in some high-end NYC club when the pens first came out.  But I gather they weren't on the market very long.
I found my Verve in a place that is IIRC connected with the local Construction Junction (only instead of reselling donated furniture and bathroom fixtures and such, the Center for Creative Reuse sells donated arts and crafts supplies: paper and notebooks; pens and pencils; yarn; art books; paint; etc.).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

The flaws, I think they were commonplace, were a loose fitting push on cap and a very unreliable clip. At the time I wore a suit for work and the usual place to carry my pen was an inside jacket pocket on the left hand side, the awkward clip and the loose cap were just too risky. The broad nib was also hungry for ink (perhaps that should be thirsty) and could empty a cartridge in a day but I could live with that.

I sold it along with 300 other pens about 15 years ago. I was in a bad car accident where my right arm had nerve damage, every surface that my hand touched felt like a block of ice, I thought my writing days were over. It took two years to recover.

I regret selling it because the Verve was such a departure from my usual fare of Vacumatics and Parker 51s, it had a lot of character perhaps because it wasn't perfect

I do, because it was used by the former owner. The tipping is attached well, unlike other examples I have seen, and the feed is in perfect condition- I understand that the screw used to adjust the nib can be overly tightened and cause the feed to crack. Had it been NOS, I probably wouldn’t, but it definitely had an active life before landing with me.

Thanks, and that's great -- I'm glad you're able to enjoy using it (though it is one I also do love just as a piece of design)!

I’m sorry about your accident, but am very glad to see that you’ve recovered. Nerve damage is such a weird pain, I have had my own bouts with it and it takes a very long time to heal. I hope you find another pen that you enjoy with as much character as your Verve. I have a Spire that also has some cap issues- it unscrews itself somehow and can definitely stain a pocket or purse. I do love the soft nib, so I just use it at my desk.

Oh no, that’s a shame.  You tend to like similar pens to what I like, so this might be one I would have to try in person. I think it’s really cute and have read a ton about how the nibs are really nice writers.

This is going back a few days, most recently the Kaweco Sport that arrived yesterday. From top to bottom: Kaweco AL Sport in red, Pilot Pluminix in lime green (blaming @Misfit ), Retro 51 Coffeehouse (blaming @boilermaker1975 ), Benu Pixie in Coffee Brown and below it, another in Plum Cream (both of which I'm blaming SBRE Brown for).

You're all a terrible, horrible bunch of enablers, each and every one of you! I really need to thank you all for that!

IMG_0122.jpg

Coincidentally, I was looking at Pen Chalet, and was scrolling through deals. Though the deal was on the Benu Pixie Coffee pen, I ultimately decided to get the Plum Cream Pixie. I was looking for other items to add to the order for one of the Sailor 50 states inks. My state’s ink is on special order, so I’ll be waiting on it to get the Benu and ink sample that got free shipping.

Right before I placed my order, I looked up the Benu Pixie here, and saw your post. So I can’t blame you for my purchase, but I can say Pen Twins again!

I ordered this pen in the Boxing Day sales. It's a Pilot Kakuno Madoromi Brown with a fine nib. Yes, I know it looks grey, but it will be listed as brown in many stores (and grey in a few). Whatever it's called it's a lovely translucent grey with a pearly white section and a gold-coloured nib. (I will post a cap-off photo in the "today's pens" thread so you can see the nib and grip. Just have to finish my journal entry so I can take said photo.)

It's a great match for Diamine Earl Grey to my eye...

Will work for pens...

Congratulations @AmandaW did it come with a Pilot Bear? Or maybe you got it on a different website.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
