I got this pen today

I have a friend, not knowledgeable about pens, who finds stuff at flea markets or garage sales, including cheap pens which she then gives to me ("I don't know anything about these, but they're pretty"). Invariably they require work and when they are fixed up I still don't want them. I haven't figured out a way to politely beg off getting any more of these, so I just keep building up my small PIF pile.

Last week I got these two. Nice, clean, 3rd-tier pens with steel nibs. I ultrasonic'd the old ink out of the feeds and put new sacs on, and they both write very nicely. The blue one has "Marine" on the clip, a brand about which I know nothing, while the nib (originally gold-plated) says "Supreme 8" (it is not a large nib, size probably about 5); and the other one has no branding at all except for the nib that says "Vari-Tone Pen." They cost my friend $5 each.

I would recommend auctioning off your growing pile of repaired fountain pens and splitting the profits with your female friend.  You two may eventually make enough money to pay for some fun trips together and you will have the satisfaction of giving these old worn out fountain pens a new lease on life.

@Paul-in-SF That blue pen is really attractive!  I keep thinking that I've got some (probably also a 3rd tier) one that is made of a similar material (but a different color) where the stripes spiral around the barrel and cap.  Unfortunately, I've been having issues with my computer over the past couple of days, and have either lost access to the main "account" (and I can't, apparently, reset my password for the better part of a WEEK) -- or have outright LOST two years worth of files and file updates --including the past two years' worth of pen and ink inventory stuff....  (where's the "potty mouth" emoji/gif when you need it?).

So, what are the nib widths on the two pens?

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

The blue one appears to be a Medium, and the other one a Fine. Quite smooth (so far, I have only written a few words with each), and no nib adjustments needed.

I think I used to have another 3rd tier pen with a material like that blue one, but I've had a few PIFs over the years and I can no longer be sure. This one is a really clean pen, and I just ran a Sunshine cloth over the metal bits and they shined right up. Marine seems to be a completely unknown brand on this board, unfortunately, at least from what I could find through a search.

Fresh in today from Endless Pens, my Piano Red Lamy Studio with a gold nib (which I still suspect is an NOS Rubine Red from 2014).  The medium nib writes smooth as silk right out of the box.  Very pleased with this one.  It will be in heavy rotation for a while.

What a great looking pen, nice color and the design is very pleasing!

Today, my brother and I went to Crown Center Shops to go to The Pen Place to get fountain pens in memory of our Mom. We chose Laban because our Mom’s name was Lavon. The model is AL Solar, with the color name Mercury. My brother got Saturn.

Before, we went to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art to get dessert in her honor at Rozzelle Court. It’s a beautiful place to eat. There are archways. It is open above with sky lights letting sunlight in. There is a fountain in the middle of the dining space.

Since words aren’t describing the place well, here are two photos from a previous visit to Rozzelle Court.

That is a lovely place! And a beautiful pen as well.

Will work for pens...

I love TWSBI pens. Solid design and manufacture and soooo many colors. My favorite is iris 😉. I don’t know that there’s better bang for the buck in another FP line. Congratulations.

Very nice. I don’t see too many DuPonts being posted on FPN.

I’ll post my DuPonts next time they’re in rotation. Nice pens, they should show up here more often!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
