Ink sample: Egyptomania Green vs. Racing Green

I have a thing for unique shades of green ink and with the Egyptomania ink available, figured must try it. Did a quick comparison with the MB Racing Green, an ink that I’ve used since it came out and haven’t really changed since. Perhaps it’s time. Anyway, just wanted to share this comparison. My wife likes the new Egyptomania and says as an Egyptian, I must make the switch 🤣

cheers

I like Egyptomania a great deal, and I think I'm probably with your wife!

I have a feeling it's another LE though, so you'd need to stock up or it will become as hard to get hold of as Racing Green is now!

Wael El-Dasher, this ink comparison is an inspired idea, and most intriguing.  My favourite colours are blue-green and purple, and so I may be in the target demographic for Egyptomania ink, but I must confess that especially in your second image which allows one to evaluate both Egyptomania and Racing Green in one glance, I am struck by the gravitas, distinction, and, yes, sheer elegance of Racing Green.  All considerations of nationality and loyalty aside, I find Racing Green to be a superlative colour, it’s hue, tone, and saturation almost perfect for the professional environment, yet also equally engaging in private correspondence.  This is in no way deprecatory of Egyotomania, which is itself a gorgeous ink, but simply to underscore the sophistication of Racing Green.

In all honesty, these photos were quick shot on my phone. While it has an excellent camera, with color rendering it becomes very tricky, especially with a 2700k narrow beam spotlight above it. I’ll scan the page to get a more true color rendition then repost.

cheers

Is Egyptomania widely(or at least somewhat) available now?

I had looked for it back in the spring/early summer and couldn't find any for sale. I'd like to try it for myself.

Not sure how good is this scan, hopefully it can show a bit more detail than the snap shots. I’ll try taking more

photos in the daylight for a more even color rendition.

I will probably order a few more bottles of the Egyptomania ink, just to have because I may suddenly want to use nothing else in a few years and I’ll kick myself for not buying more. I learned with experience, if Montblanc make something you like or even think you like, buy it and sock it away.

I’m going next week to the MB boutique ,around the corner from my home, to pick up one of the last MB Notes refill they’re getting for me from another MB boutique across the country, and I’ll ask for you (and me).

I just ordered these online from MB. I believe Fountain Pen Hospital has it and Pen Boutique as well. I recall seeing it advertised in their weekly emails. I only bought two bottles because I wasn’t sure if I’d like it or not. I’ll order 4 or 6 this week just to have, then perhaps more next month.

Now that I think about, I do the same thing with the annual edition Macallan. I buy two every Christmas time in case I like it 🤔.

cheers

Hi,

Racing Green looks great once more. 🙂

MB should release something like that again.

Egyptomania is much too blueish / cyan for my taste...

I prefer Egyptomania for color and shading. Racing Green starts off as an almost black and gets darker the longer you leave it in the pen.  It's also easy to make yourself from Royal Blue, Yellow and Black inks since I found a recipe.

Kwz ink Hunter Green is a close match - at least I'm told it is as I havent got any Racing Green to compare. The downside is Hunters Green has a fairly awful smell.

Diamine Racing Green is very nice, not the same as MB, but a very good alternative, just a tad warmer.

Kwz is not on my list, as their inks tend to be too wet for me...

MB Racing green is a really nice colour.  Just what I am looking for @mizgeorge (saturated 'pastel' green).  It's not a vibrant green at all, but distinctly green anyway.  Easy to see on the paper too.  I think my eyes are more comfortable with the more saturated colours.

Wael El-Dasher, thank you for this well-executed image; the colours have rendered better here, and please, allow me to prevail upon you how welcome will be the opportunity to enjoy any additional images taken in natural daylight as you’ve so generously proffered, time-permitting.

My previous position on Montblanc Racing Green being a superlative colour still stands, although Egyptomania looks better than ever here.  How wonderful to have this dilemma between ink colours.  Perhaps because you have leaned on Racing Green so much in the past, it may be time to forestall what I clumsily term “sight exhaustion” — the lessened ability to notice details or colour after prolonged stimulus — by changing to Egyptomania, and acquiring the latter in quantity.   “I learned with experience, if Montblanc make something you like or even think you like, buy it and sock it away,” as you so aptly put it, are words to the wise.

Dione, you’ve certainly captured my attention as I half-sleepily perused this thread.  How can I adequately express my yearning to learn the recipe you found for Montblanc Racing Green?  It may not be possible for me to do so.  Also, I sense there is a classic tale behind your discovery; if so, please share that, as well.

meiers, thank you for giving us all the opportunity to relish this luscious blue-green ink.  One of my all-time favourites, though due to learning of it far too late, I sadly possess merely one bottle.

Wael El-Dasher, only those fortunates who proudly possess a Proust fountain pen can truly divine the depths of your keen anticipation for its arrival, but the author and the rest of us can still appreciate your excitement in this post.  Hearty congratulations and wishes for many years of enjoyment are, naturally, extended to you, as well as thanks for providing us with a cliff-hanger of sorts regarding which ink colour your pen will demand.  One can hardly wait foe the reveal.
