Black with a twist

I'm looking for a subversive ink; one that appears black,. but has a purple or green sheen to it. Sort of "safe for work, but not really". I love purple, have all the Kyo-Iro purples, but for the purpose of a couple of documents need an ink that looks blacker.

Any suggestions?

Too many pens, too little time!

On the ‘right’ type(s) of paper — but not Rhodia DotPad 80g/m² — both Standard Bindery Stargaze and Sailor Manyo Chigaya will sheen; more so Stargaze than Chigaya. Neither will sheen purple or green, though. I'm afraid you've set yourself a much harder quest than just looking for a black ink that sheens any colour but black or grey.

I agree about Diamine Eclipse. The more expensive Sailor Bungubox Ink of the Witch is another with sneaky purple. I’d say Eclipse is more sneaky blue or bluish purple.

I think I've read that in large quantities Lamy Black and Obsidian will sheen green. Likewise, Waterman and Parker Blacks will sheen purple-ish blue in heavy applications. The Sailor 02* inks all have a distinct foundational hue that might suit your needs.

Oh yes, now I remember where I've seen a black ink with unmissable green sheen.

Kingdom Note Docus Hopei Binoduosus ink. (You can find photos of it on the Macchiato Man and exPENsivePhotography blogs.)

Kobe 51 Kano Cho Midnight blue is a very dark, purple leaning blue that sheens green in the right conditions! It’s my favorite work ink. Very smooth too.

I like Noodler's Zhivago.  Very dark green that looks black in finer, wetter nibs.  Can pass for black with hints of green.  And bulletproof.  Nice ink.  Lovely color when the green shows.

I always admire that Pen BBS #524-its not an ink I need, but I love the way its range is displayed in that artwork.  Thanks for reminding about it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
