Tips for using Diamine shimmer inks

Having trouble with the shimmer settling in the ink reservoir. When writing the first couple of sentences are heavy with shimmer and then it kinda dies out?

Any tips or suggestions?

Needs constant agitation. What I do is make sure the particles are well distributed before starting. Then about every sentence or so will rotate the pen a few times as well as vertical/horizontal before the next sentence. It is why I prefer to use a demonstrator pen with shimmer so I can see if they settle out and when they are back in suspension.

I usually use a broad juicy nib on a Pelikan. The' flavour' is not that important but a good flow of ink is essential.

Only fill the reservour half way then you'll have room to gently mix the shimmer ink in the barrel. Ink and shimmer will pool in the feed if left for any time so the distribution of the shimmer is too heavy to begin with as you describe, I personally give the nib a quick shower under the cold tap, blot off the excess water/ink before puting pen to paper. The occasional inversion of the pen helps to keep the 'sparkles' in suspension.

Hope this helps

When I want shimmer I use Sakura Jelly Roll gel pens.  😜

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Goulet Pens had a short tutorial (not Brian or Rachel) which I watched when I decided to try shimmer inks. One thing I remembered was to not shake too vigorously to prevent bubbles. With that said, similar to what tde44x does, I just try to "swish" the ink back and forth every other sentence. Yes, it can interrupt a train of thought when writing, but if you do it enough times, it becomes a habit.  You will also, as others have said, get a heavier concentration when you first start out.  But I have that issue with regular inks too where they are more saturated the first few sentences.  I really enjoy my shimmer inks and hope you do too.

My answer won't be popular but shimmer inks are best used with glass pens. They were never meant to be used in regular fountain pens. We see more of them because of the inku-numa phenomenon in Japan and now in other neighbouring Asian countries, which became a non negligeable market, in terms of ¥¥¥, even for Western ink manufacturers.

As a former chemist the "solution" (pun intended) is to use an inkwell with a magnetic stirrer on a low setting and a dip pen.

Speaking practically the best approach is to half fill the reservoir and gently agitate.  I am doing this already rubbing the pen like a fire stick between my hands.  Half filling is probably the best and most practical advice that was offered.  That and using a wet nib!

Thanks to everyone!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
