Otto Hutt Design 08 - thoughts?

I read the written review.

Sounds like, in this case, form did NOT follow function. What were they thinking with a section shaped like that and a balance point so far back?

The written one is mine. Feel free to ask me questions and I'll do my best to respond. I think it's a brilliant pen, looks great, well made... but it is VERY heavy and the section just did not get on with me at all. A real shame because I would have bought one otherwise.

Thanks Anthony for the honest review. For me the length of the pen seems a bit off but still contemplating whether to buy it or not. I've been waiting for this one for a while now! (& your review of it)

… and a written one:

both informative and honest.

Thanks! Checked them both out and I'm only more torn about it after haha.

Did it help you decide whether to buy or not?

Yeah not sure about the balance due to the length - it is a very long & heavy pen indeed. Both reviews seem to point to the same 'flaws' or 'but'.

I was hoping this would be a modern update to the Lamy 2000 in terms of form follows function design. But so far it seems off the mark based on the reviews. Granted that's very high expectations!

To me the Montblanc M comes close but was let down by the nib and how it feels when writing.

https://youtu.be/CbeY_EA5cOE

I saw this review this morning. It constitutes the entirety of my knowledge about this pen, and forms the sole basis of my opinions below.

Some things about the design I like -- the incised lines and their directions on the pen, for example. I don't see the point of the elaborate piston knob situation, it just seems over-designed to me. I don't mind the cap not posting "properly" because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to post that pen. The section appears very off-putting to me, and I think there are probably better ways to ensure one's grip doesn't falter (but if that were the only thing that wasn't a positive, including the price, I might try it anyway).

This is clearly intended to be a prestige pen, for the prestigious person. It has the prestige of being chock full of expensive German engineering, the prestige of the ridiculous price, possibly the prestige of the brand (about which I know very little). I am not a prestigious person, and I have no interest in this pen.

I don't get a lot of joy out of my Lamy 2000, and I think I would get considerably less out of this pen. It is simultaneously hideously expensive, and soul-crushingly grim. Put a steel nib on it and it looks like something a Soviet apparatchik might have carried.

Thank you and congratulations: a very clear, honest and illustrative review. It answers all my questions so far. 😊 I’ll have to try the pen before buying.

Same here! :) Need definitely to see / hold one in person.

If I hadn't watched SBRE Brown's review of the Montblanc LE Elvis Presely, this would have been the ugliest pen I saw today. That section alone is enough to make me shudder in horror, and seeing the imprint on @eciton's finger only confirmed my fear that it would be awful to write with for any length of time.

I'm glad OH is making pens that are different to everyone else's. It just seems to me that they are not making them for writers... 😛

Vintage. Cursive italic. Iron gall.

The rear balance point is not uncommon — after all, people like to post caps — for folks with larger hands or more stretched out grips. So I accept it even though I don't like it.

The section shape though I really see little functional justification for :(

Indeed, I remember you saying :). It's frustrating for me because it's a pen that has a lot going for it. I wear L-sized gloves so I don't have small hands, but I wonder if bigger hands or a more open grip would solve the problems. Unfortunately I think the only way to find out is to try it in person, although I did my best to be thorough!

I was surprised the first time I saw the lines pressed into my skin. Then I looked out for it and actually photographed it on several occasions — but figured one picture was enough!

The shocking thing for me was that that happened after just a few minutes of writing. I could understand having a big red welt after say an exam or a long letter-writing session.

In terms of OH as a whole, I can recommend the 07 and I have an 03 that I am enjoying in much the same way as I enjoy the ystudio Portable.

The section looks like a PVC hose fitting. WTH.

Also, what an eye watering price. I don't understand that brand at all. Everything they make that I've seen looks like it should be faber-castell Loom money. Not conid bulkfiller kingsize money.

Selling a boatload of restored, fairly rare, vintage Japanese gold nib pens, click here to see (more added as I finish restoring them)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
