Otto Hutt Design 08 - thoughts?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I noticed the Otto Hutt has released a new model called Design 08, which marks a new flagship model on their standard lineup. This pen is designed by industrial designer, Mark Braun (who has also done the Nomos Metro watch that I really like)

What are you thoughts on this pen? Do you like the design?

I'm considering to buy this but waiting for some more reviews / first impressions.

So far I know it's quite a large pen i.e. M1000 size and also weighs close to 80gms / 55 gms uncapped. Not sure how that's going to feel for daily use! But I'm intrigued by the looks.

Let me know that it think!

Cheers

Sidd

This is not my favorite design.  It is very minimalist. Given it's Otto Hutt, they have the capacity to put on more interesting patterns on the barrel.  The black section, although it is metal, looks like plastic from what I have seen in videos.

Using right now:

Jinhao 9019 "F" nib running Birmingham Firebox

Radius 1934 Settimo "F" nib running Pelikan Olivine

Majohn 140 "M" nib running Lamy Dark Lilac

Kaweco Sport Aluminum "M" nib running Diamine Firefly

> But I'm intrigued by the looks.

Isn't that enough to buy it? As long as the quality is correct, your feeling is of importance not that of others.

I have a pen with 82 g weight, 50g uncapped - absolutely no problem.

What is the grip like? Does it taper or straight? If it’s large would it be difficult to hold?

Current lineup:

Montblanc 146

Pelikan m800

Pilot 743

It is tapered.  You can see a video of the pen at Pen Chalet.  Just google it and it will show up.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I'll end up buying it when releases in UK.

Keen to hear if anyone here has bought it in any case!

I actually quite like the look of the design. I'm a fan of the industrial/minimal look. My one small quibble is that I would prefer a silver/rhodium/ruthenium-plated nib over the gold as shown. To me, that would match the overall look better.

I actually spoke with them about the nib colour. They only provide the gold option currently with no alternative from factory.

Though it might be a screw fit nib and perhaps a standard bock might fit? (Can't tell if it's bock or jowo)

The minimalistic look reminds me of the Lamy 2000 (the brushed steel version). And honestly, if I had to choose between those two, I would make a beeline for the Lamy 2000 (without even having looked at the price).

The Otto Hutt pen is nice but it doesn´t get me excited.

yeah its definitely priced like other flagship pen models like KoP or 149 etc. The quality and workmanship does look good based on Pen Chalet's unboxing video. Though remains to be seen how it feels in the hand.

such a clinical look, it just not for me as I don't care for the materials.

I quite like this pen, in particular the clean, understated “industrial” look. It reminds me of the Lamy Imporium and Lamy 2000 Black Amber. I’ve watched the few reviews on YouTube (such as the one from Pen Chalet and Samuel Naldi — actually more like advertising than a classic review, but they both provide a good overview). Before buying, I would however like to see the pen in flesh and bones.

I feel the same way! I'd like to see a few actual reviews of the pen as well. Might then decide to buy from a reputed dealer with returns policy.

Honestly reminds me of the same 2 pens. I'm not a fan of imporium and prefer the texture on design 08 compared to lamy 2000 steel.

Agree - By the way, I’ve sold my Imporium quite quickly... I must also admit that I wasn’t familiar with the “Otto Hutt” brand before a couple of months ago. So, at this price point, I would really like to read / hear some more opinions.

Yeah I think they've gone on a strong marketing drive to promote the brand. See reviews of Otto Hutt across multiple channels especially after the release of Design C. On Imporium, I bought it last month but returned it within a few days of having it. Something didn't quite sit right with the design for me.

Will keep you posted if I do buy the Design 08. For now, I've bought a Lamy 2000 (again) to fit the minimalist but good design craving!

Wise decision (I have the Black Amber and the classic Stainless Steel versions)

I know the problem… :) I had to feed the beast too… So I’ve bought the Montblanc M “red signature” (the all metal one).

Here a good video review:

… and a written one:

both informative and honest.

The written one is mine. Feel free to ask me questions and I'll do my best to respond. I think it's a brilliant pen, looks great, well made... but it is VERY heavy and the section just did not get on with me at all. A real shame because I would have bought one otherwise.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
