Thank you for the write up. I think that's a deal breaker for me, even if the pen was still available...sigh, it is so very good looking, though.

I must thank you, dear sir, for such beautiful review of this magnificent looking pen. I have been in search of a Montblanc pen for a few months now, and was quite stuck in some sort of crossroad between the regular 146 LeGrand, and this Ultra Black version.
The boutique I went to a few days ago did a little “inventory search”, and they told me they still had the Ultra Black version, and wonderfully, the F nib as well. And the best part is: it’s on a 50%, holiday season store discount. So with all those factors combined, and of course, from reading your review (and what gorgeous photography of the pen as well), it was not difficult at all to jump into the world of Montblancs.

So, allow me to share with you, my very first Montblanc ever in my humble collection. I know I shall cherish this memory very well, with all the pleasant events that happened prior to the time of purchase, and the very first time I started writing with it.

Dear Ron_A, what a great discovery you have made, and just in time to celebrate Christmas!

Personally, I believe you did the right choice. In the future, you will always have opportunities to buy a 146 or a LeGrand in more regular finishes, even a used one, because they are pens that are not in short supply. The Ultra Black, on the other hand, is not only a "rare bird", but also has an absolutely unique personality that combines the unmistakable Montblanc family air with those characteristics that make it special and modern.

Congratulations on your purchase! I hope you will have time to fully enjoy it in the next few days of rest and for many, many years to come…

I have been researching pens and discovered the Ultra Black while looking at used pens online. I really like the color combo… it is less “bling” than the gold models and the matte finish is very nice.  The color scheme looks very upscale without being over the top.  I wanted to get one but the prices for used ones is nuts… easily over $1000 for one of these in decent condition.  I found a new in box and they guy wanted $1800… nuts!  I don’t think these commanded a higher price when new….

I don’t think I could bring myself to pay $1000+ for a used ultra black when there are tons of mint 146s for $300-500…but it sure does look good.

Enjoy your pen!!

Your comment the color scheme is spot on with this pen: it is elegant and unusual but not over the top, if possible a bit understated.

I also agree that the prices you found in the net are absurd. I personally thing that paying the "correct" price for a pen, whichever the price, is part of enjoyment. In my opinion, a too high price (for what a given pen is) detracts from the pleasure of the pen.
