Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Noodlers FPN Dumas Tulipe Noire

This is review #86 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Lost focus during "take 1" and had to redo the video.  Lost the water-test recording and didn't want to do it again, so I only included the end result and comments.  Cleaning was quick and easy - especially given it's a reddish color!  Sorry - lots of noise when I recorded this: airplanes, helicopters seeming to circle my house, every "souped up" car for miles, dogs barking...

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

This is one of those inks that I like on paper, but I don't like when I write with :)

Was it Makhabesh who kept disappearing your videos in Quintus' bag or was there a special operation to capture Quintus in your area? :D

Thank you for showing another ink plus two others in the swatch that I can ignore.  This one, meh, may be good for grading snowflakes but too dark for me.

I don't know why the helicopter circled my house - perhaps they were hunting Marsell, the Oily Sorcerer of Bicbiro :D - but if I were slightly more brave, I would do what my brother suggested and paint a message in big letters on my roof...

Pretty color, but the 'forever' dry time... 🙀

That about covers it.  Fortunately, there are good alternate inks with more reasonable dry times.

Thank you Liz - no temptation for me here either :) Which is not a bad thing considering the amount of ink I've bought in the last week or so!

You're welcome!  And it's a really good thing you're not tempted, since you can't buy this ink anyway - the temptation would be very frustrating. :D

Yikes!  That IS a long dry time.  And here I was about to ask if and when the  FPN special Noodler's inks might be available again....

Does seem to be a nice color, though.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

This was discussed in a recent thread after the crash and recovery, and Wim basically said it wasn't making them enough money to justify all the labor involved and so they weren't going to return to it before things were stable - both with the new version and financially.  Then they might look into it.  In other words, don't hold your breath - if it happens, it could be a long time coming.

But, seriously, some of those comparison inks were really close.

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 275µm.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
