Hi, I could not add the text after the photo, but the question is, coming from 145 - F, and given my handwriting, should I buy my new 146 in M, or should I stay in F.

Thank you.

If it was me I would buy a different nib width. Otherwise you have two identical nibs in different pens.

I ended up with several F nibs and later regretted it.

It depends would be my response.

I have a 2x149's and a 146 with F nibs.  All three write differently.  The newer 149 wrote a wider line, more like a medium to even broad.  The older 149 wrote more like a medium with some character with a somewhat varied flow.  The 146 writes a line that's pretty much identical to the 145/Classique that I just got.  I was surprised since I had so far not had two MB nibs with grinds that are similar.  However,  I was not disappointed since I really like the F nib on that 146.

You may wish to get another pen to enjoy the different ergonomics and how it affects your handwriting, so you would stick with the nib size.  I do this a lot with much satisfaction.  So from my POV, if you're getting a 146 with a F nib, you are not getting the same pen.  You're getting a larger pen with different ergonomics in that it's thicker, with a larger nib and section.  The overall writing experience will be different for just these reasons despite the nib grind and performance being similar.  I find the writing experience between a 145 and 146 to be quite different.

Your handwriting looks about like mine and quite suited to the F nib, but a medium nib could offer an interesting experience as well.  However, having said all of that, I do have a 146 with a B nib and quite enjoy the stubby nib experience, and yes, my handwriting changes as a result.  I'm happy I got it.  OTOH, I do have B and EF nibbed (outside my personal default zone of F to M nibs) pens that I regret buying with those grinds.

So it's all down to your personal priorities and sense of adventure.  The way you are asking the question would mean that you probably need to experiment and with this in mind, I'd suggest trying broader nibs, seeing how you get on, and then take the dive for the M nib if you think you will be happy with the size up.  A different nib in a great pen can amount to a breath of fresh air or welcome change from the usual grinds.  Good luck!

Hi

Had some spare time this afternoon, so I went to the Montblanc store.

Both are 146, green is F, blue is M. I say M is OK for my writing.  What do you say?

M is somewhat wider and would add a little extra to the experience. You would have quite the pair of pens.  A smaller 145 with a F nib and a 146 with a M.  🤗

Thank you for your kind and long reply.

I am yet to decide but I think having two different nib sizes is a better option.

Your ownership of 149’s resurfaces my hesitation on 146-149 but I guess 149 is too big for daily use.

1st world problems I guess :)

Just my opinion but I think M would be too broad with your handwriting. The sample you showed here in blue has a smeared look which is usually the sign that the nib is too broad for your writing. Perhaps if you wrote larger or had bigger loops it would be a better fit. Look at the B in the word Blanc. It almost looks like a blob of ink. The correct nib size for anyone's writing should have a very clean look, not messy. Again, just my opinion.

Thank you.  I indeed think the same and went back to F.

Another question if you don’t mind.  While at the MB butique I also tried 149.  For the last 24 hours, I have been thinking it would be a mistake to move from 145 to 146 (which is somewhat similar) or just to add up a bit more so that I rather get the 149, which has been a legend.

I owned a 149. Originally bought for my father. I believe his hands were a bit bigger than mine(21cm palm circumference). It mostly sat unused because he's more used to regular sized pens. When he passed away I gave it to my wife. Again, it sat mostly unused. So, I took it back and started using it myself. Again, same result. What I discovered was that while it was the pinnacle model in the Meisterstuck line, it's really not great as a everyday writer simply due to its large diameter. Not only that but the large nib places a lot of distance between you and the paper and it's feels awkward to write with it after using other fountain pens. Imagine griping your 145 pen where the threads are while writing all the time. That's what it's like to write with a 149. I mostly use my 146, 145 and Pelikans. So, ultimately, I sold it even though it had a lot of history in my family. That's how much I disliked it. I would recommend that you visit that boutique some more and write with it so you can see what I mean. Ultimately, you're the one that has to be happy with it no matter how much of legend it is.

I agree with this.  My dislike for the Pelikan M1000 was pretty much immediate.  The decision to send it back was aided by the scratchiness of the nib.  However, I haven't for a second, ever, reconsidered getting another one.  OTOH, I enjoy an M80x.  I have 2x149's and prefer the 146's.  I prefer my recently purchased 145 to the 149.  I love looking at the nib of the 149.  It's really impressive and I occasionally ink it up and take it through till it's empty, not as comfortable as with its smaller siblings, but enjoying the look of the nib.
