Importing Pens from China

HartGummi

Recommended Posts

I have ordered several pens from China through eBay. I only picked those pens which were priced below INR 2000/- so that they would sail through customs without getting slapped with duties.

I heard a disheartening tale yesterday. Apparently there is no fixed rule, people have been charged for goods less than INR 1000/- in price.

How would you rate my chances of getting the pens (all shipped separately) without paying additional tax?

I guess if it is registered airmail, then it should pass customs without any issue. I have been lucky in importing pens and audio gears from all over the world for last 20 years without paying any custom duty so far :)

Hi HartGummi..

I agree..similar situation hire in Chile..Regular Postal Service like USPS, Japan Postal,Royal Postal and others are slowly delivery but rarely extra tax. Warning: Avoid courier services, anyone, DHL, TNT, UPS,etc because they pay custom tax in advance and extra fees for prompt transit in Custom Office. Good luck..

I believe economy shipping from China should count as regular postal service. It will take more than a month for the pens to show up!

I opted for "economy shipping" which is free but takes over a month to arrive. Does that count as registered airmail?

Have you imported expensive goods without paying duties? Could you give me a rough estimate about your largest order that passed without extra duties?

Your comment has made me hopeful about importing inks and pens.

If only I could get a Lamy 2000 without paying extra tax...

The maximum amount was 550 GBP declared value 199 GBP imported from UK using Royal Mail registered two years back. In my opinion, large value items are hit and miss things. you never know India Post/Customs. if you are going to save at least US $40-50 even after paying customs duty, then only it's a wise decision to import things else stick to local shops.

How does that work? Isn't the declared values == value?

It all depends on the seller. If he agrees to accept your proposal to mark the value less than what you pay, then there should not be any issue. Please mind that just marking the item less than what it should cost does not mean that it will not attract any customs duty. The item is accessed by the customs officer irrespective of the invoice here. They can accessed it for anything. It's the importer/buyer who has to contest against the charges. In my opinion, you don't have any choice other than to pay what is being accessed else you will end up waiting for your item for forever.

Does "Royal Mail (Signed)" fall under simple registered post?

Yes, it is simple registered post with delivery proof to the seller. Ussually takes 7-10 days.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
