Efnir: Graf Von Faber-Castell Olive Green

You got me wavering.

Do it! Do it! It's only a sample!

You don't nee another ink. You have enough already. On the other hand, you would be helping the ink vendor who could use the profits during this pandemic. And you could use the ink to write a letter to a lonely relative. Maybe you should just go ahead and get some. But only a sample! You have enough already...

That does look like the type of green I like (my current favorite green is Robert Oster Moss).

The question I have (having not watched the video) -- how "off" is the color in the photos, especially the close up? Because the ink in that image seems fairly light and sort of insipid -- or is it just that it's one that would do better on the page in a broader nib than an EF?

I'm not talking about flow here, I'm talking about the "oomph" of the color.

And no, at the moment I do NOT need any more samples. I have 8 year old samples (okay, they're mostly black inks) that I've never opened. And I just got notification email from the USPS about an hour and a quarter ago, saying that my order from Vanness (a pen, 2 bottles of ink I'd previously tried, and six OTHER samples have made it to the "Pittsburgh Network Distribution Center". Which means that by Friday morning the package will likely be out for delivery....

...

The photos are *really* off - especially the zoom - it's too blue and too pastel. In real life, the writing from my Penmaship is more yellow-green than the images show - it's also more attractive, but I won't be using that ink in this pen again - more probably in my Pelikan m405 "F" nib, or maybe my Al-Star 1.1. Take a look at the swatch at the start of the video - (on my screen) that's an accurate representation of the color I get out of even slightly larger or wetter nibs. The Century SF at the top, except when flexing it, is pretty dry and almost as fine as my Penmanship, but it still gets a noticeably darker color. And the Sailor under that is a wetter pen. Both show the color and shading better. Unless it's really dry, I would fully expect a broad(er) or stub nib to show the colors from the actual swatch (which is from the back of the Platinum nib - I always use the back of a nib to make those).

When I think of "oomph", I tend to think of R&K Solferino, for example. Since this is a sort of muted / murky green, I wouldn't use "oomph" to describe the impact of the color. But Olive Green (accurate name, BTW) really is capable of giving that nice darker, shading color seen in the swatch card. So if you like the color, it's worth trying - the lubrication makes it one that you're going to enjoy more than similar, less-lubricated colors. I've been on a search for murky greens ever since a kind soul here sent me some Montblanc Jonathan Swift Seaweed Green (long after its run was done and bottles couldn't be bought for reasonable prices anymore). This one isn't really close to that color, but is murky and interesting enough that I bought the whole bottle after trying a sample.

I still prefer Diamine Salamander - my favorite murky green - but variety is nice. :)

Finally, I have Robert Oster Moss and Bronze, but haven't used either yet. When I get to them, I could compare for you. Alternately, I could dip my Jinhao nib in them and do some writing to compare with Olive Green - I have a fine Jinhao and a medium that I can stick into a dip nib holder for this - not the most accurate, and wouldn't reflect this fine a nib, but it would compare them. For that matter, I can stick other swatches next to the Olive Green one and photograph for you, if you wish, just let me know which swatches - the poll has my current list (or I could update my google sheet and give you read-only access).

Don't know if that helps, but there it is, for whatever it's worth.

Walls this color might be a bit much for me

I always here that when I tell people that my room is olive green color :lticaptd:

It actually is quite a contrast as my room has only half walls on 3 sides ( mostly windows and big door, quite open actually) and 4th has 70% wardrobe and 30% study setup (black wood for both)......imagined and designed it when I was 12 and still wont change a thing ;)

....but it sounds like you should definitely get yourself a sample of this ink! :)

It sure does looks like I might have to, thanks again.

Thanks for yet another review! I always appreciate the efforts of other doers in the community, even if sometimes I'm remiss in not signalling it on every occasion.

I find it quite frustrating when a color refuses to be photographed. It also seems bizarre which ones do and don't reproduce well...

I have been sampling GvonFC inks one cartridge box at a time (topping up orders "to qualify for free shipping").
First impressions were not so great;

Moss Green - too saturated for me!

Deep Sea - too pastel (it was a nib problem - will revisit!)

Hazelnut Brown - oh, that's very, very nice!

Then;

Olive Green and Burned Orange have completely won me over!
The Olive is a great work-friendly everyday writing ink that is not blue or black.
The Burned Orange looks dull in reviews, but (cartridge #1) loaded into a pen it's one of the more acceptable approaches to the dread "Red" I have yet met!

Haven't committed to a bottle of either yet, but I'm thinking some of these cartridges will get used!

I like your "topping up orders" approach. :D I got Kaweco cartridges because they were actually cheaper than samples and more than enough to do my EFNIRs and figure out if I like them or not.

Julie Paradise's photos of Burned Orange were enough to make me want to try it - nothing dull here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CGFjqbhjku9/ OOOPS! Correct link: https://www.instagram.com/p/CGC1aryDEJX/

Ahem, that's Diamine Amber :) Burnt Orange is in the previous instagram post by Julie.

Whooops! Thank you for pointing that out. Edited to provide the correct link! (Julie's been posting so many and I just thought it was the most-recent orange in my feed - bad me!)

Same, but the case for cartridges has two sides. I'm really pleased I tried out those Kawecos without stumping up for a bottle - Summer Lilac is not for me! However, the lack of ability to get a paintbrush or dip-pen into the mix means you never really know? Sunrise Orange I didn't like at all in a cartridge pen (Caramel Brown was quite nice!), but when I see it layered on thick over in the Orange thread, it looks glorious!

I guess you can at least assess whether an ink works in cartridge form?

Experiments began when I bought one of those Traveller's Brass Pens (in Factory Green!), which is a great pocket pen but cartridge only, so I needed to get some research done. (It's currently married to cartouches of Herbin "Corail Des Tropiques" - great for annotating and correcting!)

Once the cartridge is open, I can use a syringe or mini pipette to suck it out and put it in my Pilot converter. :) Any excess just goes into one of my pens that takes standard international converters.

Good call! I guess I can just dump a couple of cartridges into an ink miser and have at it; dip_pen, brush, knife and fork, whatev's!

Going to circle back to that Sunrise now once I have a mo!

Thanks for the Julie Paradise link, almost a reason to subscribe to Instagram 😱 ! She is showing what I am experiencing with the GvonFC orange!

I've seen her tack some of those work-ups onto existing FPN reviews of the same ink. Can't remember if she did that with the Burned Orange. But if you're monitoring the ink review forum here, just watch for whenever she comments on an ink review - chances are you'll be rewarded with eye candy. :)

I really enjoy my bottle of this ink. It's quite well behaved, and I find it pretty. Digging my bottle of GvFC Stone Grey as well. Nice review :)

Thanks! And I should add that to my list of greys to test... :D

  • 1 year later...

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 295µm.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
