I have a weak spot for vintage adverts, specially pen adverts of course.

I'm not a collector, but when I stumble over something nice, I use to take it with me...

 

So happend on a fleamarket recently. I found a MB book, with lots of very early pen adverts inside which I would like to share with you here:

I have a similar book: Montblanc, ou l’art d’écrire, une légende by Kurt Grobecker:

I don’t recall where I got it, but it does have many interesting pictures, including reproductions of many old advertisements. Most of those you show, Christof, are in this book as well.

 

The end papers show drawings of details of various MB pens from over the years:

And my edition has a peculiarity: the captions are off by one image, in other words the caption on p. 23 actually refers to the image on p. 24, and so on. This sometimes results in moments of unexpected humor, as in the below:

WOW Christoph! I am so glad to have stumbled into this photography forum, and walk into this thread, thanks insomnia! This is fantastic! So many wonderful pens and great stories and fantastic pictures! It's all so great.

Even though I don't have the funds (and probably won't for a very long time), the skill, nor the wherewithal to find and restore such wonderful pens, I'm certainly glad there are people out there that do, especially those as talented as you :D

Pelikan 400 (1950-1956) versus Pelikan M400 (1982-1997)

 

When it comes to Pelikan 400/M400, people do often ask about the differences between the original from 1950's and the original "replica" from 1980's.

Actually, there are several differences but hard to explain/to see without having both pens side by side. The following pictures show the main differences without any claim for completeness.

Wow, thank you for the explanations!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Very nice comparison of two beautiful pens. I both own them (one actually was purchased from you ;) ).

 

Maybe a good idea to do a simular comparison of the differences between the early 50s 400? Or was it only the nib that has changed in this period?

1. Do '50s 400s all have the "Gunther Wagner Pelikan" inscription around the base of the barrel? I have only one and it does.

 

2. Is the band on all earlier 400 caps uninscribed? Again, my sole 400 has no inscription (whereas my 400NN does).

 

3. Is there a correlation between 1 and 2?

As far as I know did change three things"

 

1. nib stamp

2. cap band inscription

3. piston seal

1. Yes, all my 400 have the imprint: "Günther Wagner Pelikan" on the barrel. Some have aditional "Germany" and/or "Export".

2. Early ones have no imprint on the cap band. Later 400 have the imprint: "Pelikan 400" on the cap band.

3. probably not.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
