Monteverde Purple/violet/purpura

Amberleadavis recently offered up some inks in a great PIF thread; I was one of the lucky winners. Each winner pledged to post at least one review, so here's mine, informal and somewhat wonky, thanks to a semi-messed-up scanner.

I was really looking forward to receiving the package. Would I end up with colors that are in line with my favorites? Or maybe some of the ones that I typically don't go for (e.g., murky, pastel) that I'd learn to love? Would there be duplicates? New-to-me brands? A new stash of a favorite?

Preface to the purple review ...

I received a bottle of Monteverde Purple, along with samples of a few other inks. Generally, these fall into the first category: in line with my favorites. All are brands I've tried, but I hadn't tried any of these inks. I had about a dozen pens already inked up, many with colors similar to what I received, so I did a quick comparison here.

  • I enjoy vibrant oranges and the Sailor is a winner: brighter than the others I have, though probably closest to Diamine Pumpkin. At work I like to match inks to clients' branding/colors and I've been looking for the right orange for one of them; this will be it. [Edited to add: I believe this color is Kin-Mokusei.]
  • I really like brown inks, but hadn't tried Pelikan brown, thinking it would be more orange than I prefer. It is. But I'm grateful to finally try it; the little sample was the perfect amount to dump into my Moonman M2 (eyedropper) and enjoy while it lasts.
  • I've tried just a few Levenger inks and really like their flow. I'm looking forward to using Always Green, a perfect spring green that matches the aspen leaves that are about to appear in my yard.
  • The Pigeon Blue is really pretty. I'm always on the fence about teals. I think this is a great wintery one. (Can you tell I often change ink moods with the seasons?)
  • The Montepulciano is sure to be a winner for me; I've been looking for a burgundy shade. This will be perfect in a Sheaffer Touchdown Sentinel Deluxe (my grandfather'sthe repair of which took me down this FPN rabbit hole in the first place) once I clean out the ink currently in there.

Monteverde Purple/Violet/Purpura

I would have enjoyed reviewing any of these, but decided to go for the purple since there was more of it than any other color. I've also been in the mood for a bright purple as the snow melts and spring arrives. (Looking at this again, I realize that it is a very similar shade to the wild orchids that grow in June and that are an indicator of black morel mushrooms nearby. Mmm.) And purple is a favorite of a few pen-friends who have been on my mind a lot lately.

This landed at the right new home. Thanks, Amber!

Wow, that was fast! Thank you for the comprehensive review!

That Pigeon Blue looks a lot like Ku Jaku. Some pretty good look-alikes in general.

Great job!

BTW, the De Atramentis Pigeon reminds me of Mo Willems Pigeon (who I do not let stay up late).

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Thanks for showing all the sample colors!

Also the individual color comparisons. Always useful.

I like the range of colors and how well suited they are together, like a garden of ink on the page.

Individually, I'd use the blue and brown as is. The other colors I'd add a couple drops of black to darken the shade, especially the purple.

Pretty color -- but it appears, from the posted image, to be somewhat illegible in a narrower nib. :(

Thanks for the review, though.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I don't know if they still have this ink in their line up.

Thanks for the review, though.

I think the illegibility is a function of the scale of the image. Up close, I find it quite legible in the Metropolitan F nib, w/good contrast against the white page.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
