Pocket Six From Schon Dsgn

Recommended Posts

This great little pen finally made it across the Atlantic recently, after having the misfortune to set out just after the Covid-19 lockdown started to take effect.

Im really impressed with it, its a great little writer and the nib has a lovely feel. Deserves to have much more attention as a carry-round pen.

The only thing Id change about it - ok, two things - are that it really should have a gold-coloured nib to match the brass section, and although I get that the extra ring scored in the section provides a visual balance when its capped, in use it doesnt do much for me.

If they could do a gold-coloured nib, Id be seriously tempted to get the hammered brass version ...

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

Does anyone have both this pen Schon Dsgn and a Kaweco Supra? Or is there a direct comparison somewhere? I have the Supra in brass and steel (which, without the extension piece installed are similar in dimension to the Pocket Six), and I like the number 6 nib on the Supra, but I am looking for a similar pen in copper. The Kaweco Liliput is just a bit too narrow for me.

The Schon Dsgn Pocket Six might fill the bill nicely.

I prefer Kaweco Sport's design but the School Dsgn takes Jowo 6 nib, which adds a lot of nib options. The brass version on both pens looks really good. I don't have anything but it's tempting.

Ideally, I would buy a Supra in copper. Then I would have it in “gold”, “silver”, and “bronze”, as it were...the Supra appeals to the machinist in me.

However, Kaweco has not seen fit yet to offer the model in copper.

the Pocket Six is the closest thing I have seen to a Supra (sans extension).

I had a supra, and gave it away as I couldn't cope with the brassiness of it - I really don't like the feel (or smell) of brass pens. My pocket six, on the other hand, I love - mine is fully anodised (so the section matches the rest of the pen) and has a 1.1 stub, which is just a joy to write with.

I wonder if Ian could make an extender piece - I can't imagine it would be that difficult given the tooling is already in place? I would certainly get an adaptable longer version - not least because I'd love to be able to use a full size converter with it.

That is sort of what I was thinking too, he should be able to make an extender (which would also allow for use of standard size cartridges and adapters).

As to that "brass smell", this is the shortest good description of the issue I could find, which is actually quite interesting, especially if you are interested in the antimicrobial properties of copper and copper alloys, which in fact are also applicable to pens. It is, in fact, one of the reasons that copper and brass pens are interesting to me:

"...Copper and copper-containing alloys like brass develop a characteristic smell when touched. This is due to the formation of trace amounts of volatile aldehydes and ketones when copper comes into contact with the human skin. The human nose is extremely sensitive for these compounds, but they are of no health concern. In fact, the copper smell distinguishes real copper from fake, copper-looking materials..."

Those solid copper Caran d' Ache ballpoints are very much appreciated (and closely guarded) gifts amongst my medical friends, BTW.

Yes the Supras are a lot of metal, too, and somewhat heavy, at that. They are definitely not for everyone. 51g I think I remember mine weighs with the extension, which is heavy for any kind of extended writing. I would like also to compare the weight of my brass Supra without the extension to the weight of a brass Pocket Six (which I would also expect to be similar to the weight of the Supra, with extension, but unposted.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
