Sailor Studio 740

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!
I've been reading around this forum for months, but only just had my registration approved :)
I picked up some Sailor Studio 740 this week, as I love the feel of the 2 other Sailor inks I have (Yama-Dori and Shigure) - The ink just feels a bit more luxurious than most others I've tried!
Anyway, I've seen some people say it's very similar to the fabled Parker Penman Sapphire - Having never used it myself, I can't comment, but the pics do make it look close!
Let me know if you have any questions - The colours are as accurate as I can get!

@ NickUK -- Oooh. That does look nice. Would you call it more of a blue or a blue-purple? And is that a red sheen I'm seeing?

@ silverlifter -- Thanks for posting the link. Of course now I'm not sure which I like better -- this one or 840.... I see I'm going to be having to track down samples of BOTH.... :headsmack: And possibly some other ones.... (My wallet -- my poor, poor wallet.... Especially with the jump in prices for all things Sailor.... :crybaby:)

I have been resisting buying some of the Sailor Ink Studio and a few other Sailor-made inks. But dang NickUK, you make it so hard to resist! An excellent looking ink.

@Ruth, definitely a blue blue. It's super vibrant and rich in person - But still absolutely gorgeous to read pages and pages of.

And yes, there is a hint of red sheen at the right angle! I tried to capture it as best as possible. Also, there is a huuuuuge amount of shading on Tomoe River 52gsm paper.

@Silverlifter - My swab of the ink actually gives a really bad impression of the ink - It looks much richer when written down. I love Mountainofink, and read her reviews on the ink before I bought.

@White_lotus - After initially struggling to justify the £ per ml of Sailor ink (it's £12.99 for a 20ml bottle in the UK), I realised that it would likely last a very long time anyway, and as it's SUCH a lovely brand of ink.... I just can't refuse!

I know it is always difficult to discuss the price / worth of things as many elements need to be factored in and we are all living in quite different parts of the world, but when I compare, let's say, the price of an evening in the cinema (maybe 10€ for the ticket here in Germany) to the time I am enjoying an ink, even when using it up faster by writing in really broad & juicy nibs ... well, then it suddenly does not seem as much anymore.

Absolutely :) Although the cinema is also incredibly overpriced here in the UK!

I think the biggest justification was quantifying its worth against other inks.

Diamine is just over £2 for a 30ml bottle, and they have every colour under the sun - Why pay many times more for less ink?

For me, it's the experience - Diamine is nice, but it's not as luxurious as Sailor.

It's also the same reason I buy expensive (relatively speaking), parchment envelopes at £4 for 20, rather than a 100 pack of plain white envelopes for £2.......

With how many I'll end up sending, I'd rather the experience was much nicer, and the annual cost is still very low.

Also, there is price, and then there is total cost of acquisition (or alternatively, total cost of ownership). Shipping charges aren't part of price however one argues it, even though one feels the pain on the hip pocket from those all the same. Markups by the local distributor and/or retailers of imported products could often be circumvented, in this day and age of global online ordering, if one is philosophically and staunchly opposed to middle men taking a substantial cut of one's discretionary spending. Sometimes it takes wearing some pain (on the hip pocket, and/or in terms of additional effort and rigmarole) to get material satisfaction and appease one's principles while at it — as long as the principle isn't just to get everything at as little cost to oneself as possible, so as to "stretch" one's purchasing power without working harder/more, and without taking more money off other people.

I balk more at paying a higher price than I've seen at a recent low point for a particular product, than whether this pen is $500 and that ink is $50 a bottle, and how many coffees or cinema tickets I could buy with that amount of money instead.

Anyway, I was very close to putting together an order for Sailor Ink Studio inks several months ago, but I just struggled to find enough of them to make the free international shipping threshold (which wasn't much, at roughly A$200) for the entire order. I didn't see the individual bottles as pricey, and I would have happily bought thirteen(?) of them at a go if I could find that many that appealed better than the Sailor Shikiori and Kobe INK Story ink colours I already had.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Sailor 740 seems to be out of stock everywhere in the US right now.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

Because of the price and packaging?

I think this color is very much like the Diamine Blue Velvet looking at the photos posted.

At first I thought "Thank goodness! Now I don't have to worry about resisting because I couldn't get it anyway."

Then I checked Anderson Pens. In stock.

Now I'm back to resisting! Dang it!

I wonder about the differences between this ink and the 743 (which I presently own). How is your experience with the flow of this ink, if I may ask?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
