Wing Sung 698 Nib In Pilot 92?

Megaloblatta

Recommended Posts

I would be very grateful to know if a nib from a Wing Sung 698 would fit on a Pilot 92 without any modification? I hate my 92 nib as it is scratchy and I can't seem to smooth it.. The 14K nib I have on my 698 is the best nib of any of my pens, but I don't like the 698 as the cap doesn't post. If the 92 can't take the nib, might it be possible to put it instead on a TWSBI 540?

I have never swapped nibs before but if it isn't too difficult a process I'll give it a go!

Thanks!

PS. Since writing the above, I took the nibs out of the 3 pens mentioned above (never done this before) and found that they differ in design, and that the Wung Sung nib won't fit on the Pilot or TWSBI feeds. My question now becomes - is there a piston or vac filler clear demonstrator pen which has a cap that can be posted and which has a feed onto which the Wing Sung nib would fit nicely without modification? Does anyone know?

The 698 14K nib is profiled against a very old design ( think 1930's ) and AFAIK, no other pen other than Wing Sung's own fits it and by Wing Sung's own I do mean a couple of their current model and then some vintage Wing Sung models but none are Piston or Vac ... in the past I had hack this nib to be fit onto a variety other pens that holds a no.6 but that would require hacking the feed mostly. And yes I had once hack one onto the PenBBS 456 before and made it work, though in the end I take it off as I've found the aesthetic a bit off balance .. that is all I can tell for now

Very many thanks for the replies! I may try modifying the feed of a relatively cheap piston or vac filler pen to take the WS 14K nib, now that I understand nibs a little better than I did.

??? Not sure what you're basing this off but it's wrong. It's a pretty standard #5 nib, so of course it won't comfortably fit into a #6 pen, but it fits perfectly in, say a TWSBI 580 or Vac Mini. It should fit any pen of the same nib length and width without much tinkering. The only potential issue is that feed profiles might be slightly different, but the WS698 uses the same design as most Pilot #5 nibs, so that shouldn't be an issue in this case.

Nope. The 698's 14k nib is a stupid common #5 size. I've put mine in a faber castell loom, moonman n3, delike alpha, vac mini, numerous others, and right now it's sitting in my indigraph.

I tried it on the Pilot 92 and TWSBI 540 feeds but the 'wings' on the side don't fit the grooves on the feeds. Do they have to fit into such grooves - or can you force it to fit? Sorry for this possibly naive question, but I don't want to damage the feed or the nib.

Ha ha. I work on cockroaches - hence the name!

No I didn't ruin the nib, but I can't manage to make it write smoothly. I gave up and hope that I can find someone with lots of experience to do it for me at some point in the future.

Cheers,

George

If you wanna try something neat, stick a standard #5 nib in a pilot feed designed for the "wing" nib. Most actually fit!

The 698 14k uses the normal 698 feed but just uses a normal #5 nib with no wings. it just fits. The 698 14k nib is actually pretty darn incredible. It's a japanese F width and about as soft and flexible as the pilot #5 14k SF nib, maybe a hair more.

  • 1 month later...

Even though my post which started this thread is now old, I thought I would write a concluding post to clear up some confusion which may mislead anyone reading this thread... Basically when I wrote my posts I had assumed (always dangerous to do..) that the Wing Sung gold nib I wanted to put on the Pilot CH 92 was the same design as the Wing Sung 698 steel nib. I had found that the steel nib had 'wings'/flanges on either side which made it impossible to fit on the feeds of other pens without modifying the feeds. However, I have discovered that the gold WS nib lacks the flanges which I thought it must have, but I only discovered this recently when I pulled it out of my WS 698 which was inked up when I wrote the posts above. The gold nib is in fact pretty much identical to the number 5 nib on the Pilot CH 92 and I have now put it on this pen and it works perfectly. I also tried it on a TWSBI 580 and it fitted - but was tighter than the TWSBI steel nib.

Megaloblatta- you out to take your pens to a guy like Henry Simpole ( assuming you live in the UK), and have him have a go at fixing up your pens, smoothening you nibs. Henry has a booth in the Portobello Rd flea market

Yes, I live in London. Thanks for the suggestion as I am new to the hobby and don't know anyone who can do this. I go to Portobello on a fairly regular basis - where is Henry's stall? I actually only have one nib which needs work - the Pilot CH 92 nib. I am disappointed with it but hope it can be fixed. I tried to sort it out myself but couldn't and I didn't want to go too far and ruin it!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
