Which One Do You Prefer - Heritage 1912 Vs Classic 149

I don’t own a 149 but when I made my first (and current only) FP purchase in 2015, I was choosing between the Daniel Defoe and Heritage 1912, and made my decision on the 1912.

It’s an absolutely joy to write with and its more flexible and retractable nib makes it even more unique. If I were you, I’d keep both the 149 and 1912 but if you must let one go, I’d say the 149.

The only small issue I have with the 1912 is the inner part of the cap where the screw threads are, after numerous cycles of capping and uncapping, has left some marks on the pen’s barrel. I read that it’s a common issue with 1912 pens.

Not even comparable.. I'd get rid of the 1912 first. The 149 is just a workhorse of a pen with fantastic nib and ink capacity. It's in my edc pouch. My 1912 only gets occasional rotation.

My 1912s are daily writers. Have you given yours a good work-out?

you can polish those marks off with a soft cloth.

Really? I thought the marks are worn into the barrel and are permanently there. I shall try out your method.

I think its the other way around, the marks are deposits from the cap on the barrel so can be polished off.

Thank you for your comment.

I wrote a lot with 1912 when I first got it.

I know many users comment the 1912 as a great pen with buttery, smooth nib. I cannot agree more to the description.

However, I prefer writing with the 149 even more with its stiff, tough nib.

But 1912's complicated mechanism and the sentiment it carries are the reasons why I love it. Although now I don't write with it as often as I used to, I still have great love for it. Even though now I am looking to trim down my collection, I still cannot let it go.

Perhaps after a longer period of time, when I no longer write with it, I will be able to let it go. I guess only time can tell.

I currently own three of each model and like them equally. They are very different fountain pens. I would say that the Heritage is unusual: the retractable nib is a fun feature that adds an element of playfulness to the pen. I find the Heritage pen to be very ergonomic and easy to use for extended writing sessions. Its nib is softer and a little more flexible than the 149 nib.

I also think that 149 is more suited for writing when you are comfortably sitting down at a desk. Its ergonomic design is outstanding. WIth its classic, understated design and celebrated history, I would only consider purchasing a 149, used or unused to be a great decision.
