J. Herbin Bleu Des Profondeurs

Well, I've now tried my sample of Bleu des Profundeurs, and can report that it behaves really well in my Snorkel with the EF nib -- a pen that is sufficiently finicky that it did NOT do well with vintage Skrip Peacock in it (go figure). It seems to dry a little faster on poor quality paper than the Diamine Anniversary 1864 Blue Black; it's actually a little closer in color, oddly enough, to Diamine Anniversary Regency Blue.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Gave this ink a try in a Leonardo Momento Zero stub. It’s a very nice ink! Basically it strikes me as a darker version of Bleu Nuit... both Bleu des Profondeurs and Bleu Nuit are so very, very French somehow. In terms of wetness, it has good flow but I cannot say that it’s even wetter than Sailor Shikiori Yonaga. BdP shades nicely and subtly and offers good lubrication. I’ll be using it a lot in this pen.

Thanks to your great review, i’ve now tried this stuff and am hooked on it.

It’s wet and dark enough to do justice to an XF or Fine nib, but also stands out with broader, juicier nibs.

Just filled a Waterman Carene’ Deluxe with a medium nib and the pen loves this ink.

So far, it seems to clean out easily with only a few flushes of water. A quality i like.

Thank you again for taking the time to do this review.

Lovely re3view, thank you!

Great review, thanks!
I have found this ink to be a great match with Platinum pens.

Yes, it is very very wet ink :) and gorgeous colour. Your photos are so true to what I see on the paper!

Funny thing about that- before even getting to the comments, my first thought is that this would pair beautifully with my PTL-5000a's medium nib!

Seeking another ink (which I don't need) this one seems very appealing. Fantastic review (as always), thank you a lot!
Has somebody done a fading test of this (not only in closed notebooks, but sun, UV and such stuff)? I wonder how it stands...
Do you like Yonaga more than this?

Thank you and all the best in 2020!

Seeking a Parker Duofold Centennial cap top medallion/cover/decal.
My Mosaic Black Centennial MK2 lost it (used to have silver color decal).

Preferably MK2. MK3 or MK1 is also OK as long as it fits.
Preferably EU.

Yes, I've had it on my fading sheets since mid July of this year--no fading observed so far. I don't measure in direct sunlight, but taped to a wall opposite 2 large windows.

Edit: just made another round of scans: no visible change since mid-July (second sheet):

Thanks to your review. I’ve discovered this and have been using this stuff everyday since i wrote here in July. It is a very juicy ink. No fading at all so far, love the dark blue color, Has character. dries with a very, very, slight hint of gray. Similar to De Atramentis Atlantic Bllue.

In behavior and looks, it is a lot like Sailor Kobe N 51. Very dark blue, very wet, nice lubricant. Great in Medium, Fine and Exfine Nibs. By the way, It shines in a Parker 51, and cleans up easily.

I’ve already drained one bottle, working on my second.

Thanks for the heads up on this ink.

Thank you for the photo above.

That's especially persuasive to my eyes.

Of the 20 or so "perle des encres" Herbins I have tried so far, Bleu de Profondeurs has the distinction of being the only sheener, and while the rest of the line has beautiful pastel hues this one is quite saturated, as is Rouge Grenat to a lesser degree. I love the perle des encres series and this one is a standout. Thank you for the beautiful review

For the #50shadesofbluechallenge (link to the hashtag on Instagram), a challenge over at the German PenExchange forum for July & August 2020, I inked up all my pens with all the 50+ blue inks I have. The snapshots might also be of interest to some here.

fpn_1598798520__2020_08_04_50sob_jherbin

I had this beautiful and velvety wet ink in a vintage Brause Iserlohn fountain pen with a vintage Montblanc 342 OBB steel nib.

Especially in the blob-swatch the sheen its rims develop is visible.

This ink goes down wet as a dark purplish blue and dries seconds later into a grayish blue-black.  Am I wrong?

I was looking back at my notebook pages and found this dried ink very very attractive. I had to experiment with it to realize that it was the purplish ink that turns gray before my eyes. I'm not a huge fan of the hue when it's wet, but once it's dry, Hmm very interesting.

This is my experience too.

While cleaning out a pen filled with this ink, I noticed that when diluted heavily, this ink can sort of multishade.

Interesting.  Next time I use it, I'll try to remember to fill the pen with a bit of water when the ink stops flowing, just to see if I can replicate this. :)

It was only apparent when an inkdrop from cleaning fell on paper, so I doubt it would be visible unless a double broad was used.

Well, my next use won't be a Japanese EF nib. :) Maybe a stub...
