Faber Castell Gentleman Seal Replacement

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody. I am looking for help to proceed with the seal replacement on a Faber Castell Gentleman fountain pen.

I have not been able to see how to remove the filling mechanism. If anybody is familiar with this model, I would appreciate the input. Thanks in advance.

Victor.

Additional information about this pen. When you unscrew the blind cap, it pops up and now you can rotate it to advance or retract the piston.

Not a commonly seen pen here in the USA. There is a seam at the section, so based on experience I would assume that you can go in from the front end. If the piston comes out the back, you are likely to need a spanner/wrench to unscrew it.

Thanks Ron, I will try removing the section carefully. I looked into the back end inside the barrel and there appear to be two slots for a spanner, but they are about 3 mm deep, about the length of the thread of the blind cap. So it would require a special tool with the spanner angled at 90º and a slot extending around the angle, long and wide enough to fit the tool around the post. I thought such a tool could be available from someone who works with German pens...

Hello Ron. I followed your advice and succeeded in replacing the seal.

I am posting the repair process in case it is useful to someone else.

I first tried to unscrew the section and even after ultrasound in ammonia solution, it wouldn't budge. It feels like it's welded with a strong solvent.

I then had an angled spanner tool made for the application and was able to remove the filling mechanism without difficulty..

The cork is held in place by a screw with a wide flat slotted head. I removed the screw and the cork seal.

Replaced the cork with two o-rings 2.4 x 4.3 mm, lubricated the o-rings and mechanism with solid Vaseline and then reassembled the mechanism into the pen barrel. The pen is now working perfectly well.

I didn´t attempt disassembling the blind cap. It is spring loaded and it seems to hold part of the mechanism inside it. When it is popped out it actuates the piston by turning it, but when it is pushed in, the mechanism does not move when screwing the cap into the barrel.

Thanks again for your guidance Ron.

Victor.

An additional note about this pen. The feed and nib assembly has two slots on the feed and can be removed with the same spanner drive I made for the other end. I didn't try to remove it because it was not necessary, but that explains why the grip section of the pen is welded to the barrel, since it is not necessary to remove it in order to knock out the feed.
