New Blue Ink In My Top 5. Horizon Blue

Recommended Posts

Monteverde horizon blue is now one of my favourite blue inks.

Well behaved in pens, nicely saturated and dried fairly quickly.

As a bonus it comes in a 90ml bottle for under $25.

I agree. Great color (for a "true" blue), good maintenance and decent price. Can't say that for dozens of other true blues.

I always use Waterman Serenity Blue in a new pen because I know exactly how the ink should behave. Had I discovered Horizon Blue earlier in my fountain pen hobby it likely would have been my new-pen ink instead of Serenity Blue.

horizon blue is my kind of blue and my kind of INK - nothing watered-down about it. excellent in finer and dry nibs too. well-behaved, and to me, a good colour. Practical and legible. I am not after theatrical, dramatic shadings.

Horizon Blue jumped to the top spot for me, too. It is what I had envisioned as the perfect (for me) work ink. I'm glad I didn't have to go through a ton of blues to find it.

you are lucky because I had to go through quite a number of watered-down 'untrue' blues to 'arrive' finally at Monteverde Horizon Blue.

Yes, I was. I had tried 4 or 5 blues and was uninspired. I got a 90ml bottle of Horizon Blue free with a pen purchase (I took a chance because I wasn't really interested in the other colors that were offered, plus the sample pics looked good). It turned out to be exactly what I wanted in a blue ink. I still have a few samples of other blues to try, but I'm not expecting any of them to change my mind.

Agree with all the above praise for this wonderful ink, which exhibits exemplary behaviour all round.

I even find its claim of longer cap-off time due to its "ITF Technology" to be borne out in my experience.

And it's one of only a few inks that doesn't burp in a particularly finicky eyedropper filler of mine.

Just put my second fill of Horizon Blue in one of my best pens, a Montblanc Agatha Christie. Superb ink, and it doesn't hurt that it resembles Parker Penman Sapphire.

I’ll have to try it. Right now using MB Midnight Blue and Diamine Blue Velvet. The Diamine is first bottle, it’s ok. The MB is my fav blue

Monteverde Horizon Blue is great.

Horizon Blue is the closest I have found to Parker Penman Sapphire PPS). Someone else on FPN found the same, but you'll have to search to find the thread where we discussed it. I used two pens, one with each, for a couple months and could not tell them apart when I looked later.

Since Penman Sapphire is out of production and since it is a great ink that changes colors depending on the time of day, and since PPS sells for about $90 on EBay, when someone offers a bottle, buy MV HB.

It has a higher surface tension, I'm betting that's why. In all my demonstrators, it beads up and rolls off the barrel wall. It doesn't leave behind any "residue" for lack of a better term. It behaves the way rain does on a freshly washed and well waxed car. This makes it easy to flush from pens too.

I like it, and it is indeed close to PPS. But Sailor Bung Box Sapphire is superior and actually looks closer to the PPS sample I had. I guess with PPS being so old, there's bound to be performance and color differences between the few remaining bottles that are out there.

Well, the Conklin Horizon Blue is the same stuff, made in Austria and bottled in the USA. Great inks both.

I think Conklin and Monteverde are both owned by Yafa, so it's not surprising if this is the same ink with both brands' respective names on it.

I have a few bottles of PPS, horizen blue, and a couple of bungubox sapphire on the way. When the bungubox is here I will be able to do my own comparison.

Messing around with Goulet's Swab Shop, Horizon Blue and Blue Velvet are very similar colors, with the Diamine being, maybe, a touch darker. Anyone have any thoughts on how they match up in use?

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
