Fold Over Notes / Informals

Recommended Posts

I am trying to find out a little more about creating/buying fold over notes / informals which I would like to make use of in place of cards for short notes and thank yous.

Are these notes just normal paper folded in half and written on as if it were a card? This would mean that the lower half of the page was used if you were to fold the paper back to be a flat sheet.

Is any particular thickness of paper used?

I am UK based and cant find anywhere that sells personalised ones so Im guessing most people just take a normal sheet and fold it themselves. Any insights from those that use them would be really welcome!

Thank you!

Try to find a paper supply store that caters to the local printers. They will have all kinds of fold over cards and envelopes used for wedding invitations, etc. I've been using the box of blank cards I bough for over 20 years and they are so nice to have on hand.

Thanks. I suppose blank cards are a great option but I thought (mistakenly?) that informals were a little more like a folded thick sheet of writing paper or similar?

Do you write on the front or just leave it blank?

Thanks again!

You are correct. Informals are a folded sheet. You write on the lower half of the inside. Traditionally, these are for ladies, and have the lady's name engraved on the front. Cards are used more frequently by men, and have the name engraved at the top. Both of these are used for short notes--longer letters are written on larger sheets. Thanks! Thats really helpful - I thought that was the case but I just couldnt find confirmation. Knowing nice paper folded over is good enough for an informal note.

Genders aside, Ive never seen or heard of a correspondence card being used in real life (although the formal applies for invitations of course). Notecards are well used by both men and women in my experience.

If you want something that feels a bit luxurious, have a look at Fabriano Mediovalis folded cards. They are gorgeous. Blurb on back of box says "Mediovalis is a high quality mould-made paper produced in Fabriano since 1904. Card with four deckle edges hand trimmed from watermarked sheets. designed for personalised invitations and greeting cards. Ideal for calligraphy, letterpress and inkjet." They are a step up from a folded sheet of letter-writing paper though, the paper is 260gsm, so pretty thick. I got mine from a local art shop.

I am a big fan of notecards, and found the same as you that in the UK most personalised cards are correspondence card style, not folded.

If you want, with Incowrimo almost upon us, I am happy to write you a note on one of these cards and send it to you so you can have a look/feel of them, if you want to PM me your address.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
