Hi all,

Below a few pictures of a new MB139 “replica" in Tibaldi Impero celluloid I’ve just finished in my shop.
Note he pen is dimensionally not an exact replica , and this for the following reasons :
1- The barrel end diamater and the filler housing diameter are slightly reduced, and the filling knob features a small conical diameter reduction over a 5mm length at its top.
The modifications were triggered by the fact that I have encountered too many MB139 caps with cracked cap lips.
These cracks were generated by posting the cap on the barrel .
On the original MB design the barrel "wedges” in the cap lip , hence creates radial tensions on the cap lip.
By slightly reducing the barrel and filler housing diameter, the barrel can enter 5mm deeper in the cap.
And by providing the small conical diameter reduction on the filling knob, the filling knob now enters 3mm deep in the nib chamber.
Doing so posting now occurs by wedging the filling knob top cone inside the nib chamber entry, were the cap is very robust.
No radial tensions on the fragile cap lip anymore .
On the attached sketch you can see on top the original posting ,and below the modification I’ve made
2- I’ve made the central cap ring and the clip from sterling silver, and the two small cap rings from gold plated brass.,
So cap rings set-up is inversely to the original MB139 set up
3- I’ve used a telescopic filler originating from the Montblanc 14X range pens, given these fillers are more maintenance friendly.
The MB nib installed is a flex F/M nib of the fifties in combination with a ski-slope feed both mounted in a screw in nib housing.

Being a person who (nearly) always posts, I'm delighted to see the thought you have put into that issue. Nice solution. Just curious: do you need a donor 139/149 for each of these pens? And is that an original ink window?

It’s stunning. I love these flattop pens; the super-long ink window and cap work reminiscent of a 139 are nice touches.

Can I tell I wholeheartedly hate you? :lol:

 

On one hand, your works are a pleasure for the eye and the mind, knowing how strongly you thought about the result, the many hours you put on them, and the masterfulness of the result achieved.

 

But then, on the other, knowing that, because all of the above the price it lawfully commands, I won't ever be able to own one of your marvels... GRRRR!!!

But what's truly impressive, apart from the beauty of the finished product, is that fact that you've actually been able to improve on the original through thoughtful consideration of the engineering issues.

Simply beautiful Francis! Just today I was thinking to myself, why hasn't a replica been made in this gorgeous material and how it would look. My curiosity has been satisfied.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
