Pen Skips Continuously At First Letter

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I have recently acquired a Pelikan M200 with M nib.

I have noticed that on all smooth paper it has trouble starting of, once there is the tiniest bit of ink on the paper it gets 'traction' and starts writing. Pushing harder doesn't help.

I've noticed that it happens on for example the following paper types:

Penco B5 "Foolscap" Notebook.

Royal Crown Mill "Vellum Paper"

While on a bit rougher paper it always starts immediately and doesn't skip at the first letter. Paper like the following writes fine:

Royal Crown Mill "Laid Paper"

Will it get better over time, is the pen(Nib) broken, is it me doing something wrong?

I am currently using the Pelikan Edelstein Onyx ink in the Pelikan M200 with M nib. I have also ordered a M400 Fine nib, maybe since it's fine it's gonna "scratch" the paper a bit more and have less skipping?

Thanks in advance guys 'n girls.

Kind regards from Zürich, Switzerland.

Jip

Hi Jip,

I have no idea how smooth the paper is, but too smooth paper may be problematic (it may be like writing on a mirror). However, this usually isn't the case.

Does the pen skip in every direction? Or just one direction?

In any case, a pen should write fine and without skipping out of the box, you could ask the seller for a replacement.

If you want to repair it yourself, and if you have some experience with pens: It may be that the nibs are slightly misaligned. In that case I would refer you to the following web page: https://www.jetpens.com/blog/guide-to-fountain-pen-nibs-troubleshooting-tips-and-tricks/pt/777

Be careful, doing repairwork yourself may void the warranty.

Sounds like baby bottom.

When I was new I was lucky enough to read Richard Binder's blog..........It explains everything you want to know, and a hundred things you didn't know you needed to know. The bible of fountain pens, nibs, filling systems, good advice on inks and very very pretty vintage pens.

Take three days to read through.

But what you want is in nibs.

Thanks for your reply!

When I set horizontal lines it skips most from left to right ->

From right to left <- it barely skips.

I am right handed.

I looked at the website you send and it seems the only possible problem it could have is either baby bottom or that the ink feed line is too close/touching but I dont have a magnifiying glass yet to look at these things.

I did order the M400 F nib which has not arrived yet, but its a bit sad that the M200 With M nib out of the box has these problems... I never had this with the two Parker Jotter M nib pens which costed waaaaay less.

Thanks for the advice, and indeed it does sound like baby bottom. Should I contact the web store where I bought it or just email Pelikan?

I would contact the store you got it from first. I would also recommend doing a little research on nib tuning. Most nib issues are easily resolved with minimal tinkering. You might be able to resolve this yourself.

I'm betting when the new gold nib gets there, you'll forget all about that M200 nib. If all else fails, M200 nibs can usually be had for less than 35 bucks.

Another thought: that is a wet ink, so any hard starting issues aren't because of the ink. Also, the M400 fine nib will likely be a wider/fatter line than your medium M200 steel nib. It shouldn't feel scratchy on the paper at all. Pelikan gold nibs are usually wetter than their steel nibs too. Edited by sirgilbert357

I already find the M200 M nib quite wide... but just right (when it writes...) I read that M400 is a bit fatter so I ordered a F nib instead. Let's hope I like it and don't have to go to the EF nib. Beside that I already like the M200 nib quite good, so if the M400 nib is even better I'm very very sure this is gonna be a favourite pen.

Thanks for the help so far.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
