Scabiosa is a class of its own. Paired with dry pens, it is very pale and not easily legible, in wet pens, it comes alive and shades on any paper.

Diamine Imperial Purple, R & K Cassia, my personal all time favourite Sailor Jentle Nioi-sumire (sweet violet), should all be considered when you are talking purples.

J. herbin pousseire de lune is a gorgeous shader, in fact all J. herbin inks tend to be gorgeous shaders. Waterman Tender Purple and Monteblanc Lavender Purple both get good reviews but I haven’t tried them.

Noodlers Black Swan in Australian Roses was all the rage a few years back and an amazing shader to boot but there were some batch inconsistencies and I think the formula changed? Someone can back me up on that cause I’m not sure.

Private Reserve Tanzanite but I think PR shut down? Man, sorry for the vagueness. Lol. Lamy Dark lilac is a prize but I don’t think it’s available anymore. Definitely jump on it if you ever encounter it in the wild.

Monteverde Charoite is a new fav of mine and it’s got some sheen to it in the right paper if that’s your thing. Diamine Bilberry but it doesn’t much shade so much as it explodes off of the page in a dazzle of saturated colour. (I like it). I also love Diamine Eclipse but it’s so dark it’s practically black. A great winter ink though.

The praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards.

I find De Atramentis Aubergine very wet in most pens and prefer Montblanc Lavender Purple or Diamine Imperial Purple. Waterman Purple is also very good.

For my sister the purple lover Poussiere de Lune is too dark in most nibs. She votes for Violette Penseé and Larmes de Cassis out of the Herbin purples. It needs to be really distinct from black for her to like it, because she’s also a black ink lover. I haven’t talked her into trying other purples since she prefers other pens to fountain pens.

The Herbin set definitely helps narrow down your taste in purple, since it’s got a classic one, a blue toned one and a dark one.

DeAtrementis Aubergine is a nice, dark purple. But it is a very wet ink and it feathers on less-than-perfect paper.

I love the color of Rohrer & Klingner Cassia, but I had problems with bleedthrough/showthrough in one of my Japanese notebooks. Now that I've noticed this, I will try it with more kinds of paper.

As someone pointed out earlier, Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses does shade nicely, but there is a lot of variation in color between batches. If you get a bottle you like, then great.

I have so many purples right now it isn't even funny. Here's some good ones:

Diamine Imperial Purple (my company's official color)

J. Herbin Violette Pensee

Private Reserve Tanzanite (one of my personal favorites)

Noodler's Purple Heart (my other personal favorite)

Sheaffer Skrip Purple - that's one of the truest flat purples, in my opinion.

Another vote for Montblanc lavender purple. I haven't tried a lot of purples but this is the one that made it to my collection.

I have enjoyed 2 bottles of 50ml each of Montblanc Lavander Purple.

^---Indeed! For me, MB Lavender Purple is a fascinating ink. On the one hand, it is a rich, deep, exquisite purple/violet. What sets it apart is that if you write a full page with it, it won't look overwhelming, gaudy or like a neon-sign. Instead, it will look classy. For me, it is the only non-black, non-blue ink that I can use for everyday writing and journaling.

Oh where do I begin? (I LOVE purple inks).

I'm less enamored of Scabiosa (even though I tend to like iron gall inks) because it's very dry.

Other (IMO better) IG purples: KWZI IG Violet #3 (leans more red) and IG Gummiberry (more of a blue violet). Also rather like Platinum Classic Lavender Black (again, a red-leaning one, but a great shading ink).

I love De Atramentis Aubergine, but I don't find it to be much of a shader. A nice one that nobody has mentioned yet is Pelikan 4001 Violet, which shades quite nicely (much as I like the now unavailable Edelstein Amethyst and Lamy Dark Lilac). For a true middle of the spectrum purple (which doesn't lean EITHER red or purple), have a look at Noodler's North African Violet (although I don't remember if it shades much).

MB Lavender Purple is nice (but more expensive than some) -- it's one of the few MB inks I liked well enough to want a full bottle of, but it doesn't see a lot of use.

Another vote for Noodler's Purple Heart, which is well behaved but a little more of a brownish purple (don't be afraid of Noodler's inks).

I also want to do a quick shout out for a couple of more lavender toned inks that don't get a lot of mention: Modern Skrip Purple (which was the first ink that worked well for me in a Sheaffer Snorkel with an EF nib -- not even vintage Skrip Peacock did that ); and if you can get your hands on vintage Quink Permanent Violet do so. And if you don't like it, I'd be more than happy to take it off your hands..... B)

I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting, like some of the Robert Oster inks.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
