~ Cyrille:

If one were blindfolded and first handled the Spider 1906, and then picked up the Solitaire Snake, would the weight difference be obvious?

In other words, would it be clear which one ha greater mass?

In terms of writing comfort, do they both feel good when used as writers?

I use both light and heavy pens, but have a special appreciation for heavier pens, such as your magnificent Coral 1914.

Tom K.

Yes we feel the weight difference between snake and spider:

  • Solitaire snake: 46,5g with cap and 29,3g without
  • Spider Metamorphosis : 62g with the cap and 42,2g without
  • Heritage 1914: 117,4g with the cap and 78g without

As most of my pens are limited the weight is most of the time heavy so I don't have any issue with this if the pen is well-balance and it is the case with the Heritage pens. So for me it is not an issue to go from the snake to the spider and vice versa. But the snake and spider are not the best for people wanting to have light pen.

And before buying the snake I was a little bit afraid I will found the pen too thin and I will have difficulties to have it well in hand and finally I like it and the spider too very well and use them (roller and FP for the snake and FP for the spider) daily at work.

Thank you for providing such precise comparative weight information.

What stands out is the 42.2g uncapped Spider Metamorphosis is nearly the same as the 46.5g capped Solitaire Snake.

The Spider Metamorphosis is substantial pen.

Your Coral Heritage 1914 is a grand pen in all aspects, including weight.

It's especially pleasing to know that your pens are used in the workplace.

I smile thinking of such special creations, wondering what your colleagues might think if the notice a spider on your pen.

Sorry for the ignorance, but am I right in saying that neither the Snake, nor the Spider (resin or metal) fountain pens have an ink window?

It seems so, but I have seen pictures of other pens that had a coloured ink window that was practically invisible in the picture, especially if the pen was full.

In the 2 FP I have there is no ink window on them. I just quickly saw the other snake edition in the past but I think it is the same for all editions (coral, black, tropic brown and ebonite).

Thanks, I was almost sure of that, since I couldnt find any picture online that would even hint at an ink window; your clarification confirms it.

I like the overall look of the pens, but I love too much the ink windows I enjoy in my 146 and 149 to consider buying one of the special edition. On the plus side, this should be a relief for my wallet, as I have seen very few Special/Limited/Writers/Legacy Edition pens to feature an ink window. :)

Indeed it is a good point for your wallet because in all of my limited edition I think Hemingway is the only one to have an ink window, all others are without one. Or you can buy a skeleton, you have a giant ink window in them :)

Doesn't the Antoine Saint-Exupery have a window?

The only ink window I remember having seen was on the Meisterstück Le Petit Prince LeGrand fountain pen.

Were there any other ink windows on pens related to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry?

None of the recent writers or patrons have ink windows. I take it to mean that MB no longer wants their luxury pens to be used in meetings or boardrooms. Only in your office or at home with ink supplies available

I am starting to actually prefer the absence of an ink window. Makes me hesitate less to venture into untested ink territory in my pens as I dont have to worry about staining.

Lorenzo, Christie, Voltaire, Dostoyevsky, Cervantes and Imperial Dragon certainly had them. Some more may have too.

Yes, I remember drooling at the Dostoyevsky and the Hemingway. :) But other than that, Im fine with my 146 and 149. I also bought the resin Le Petit Prince, since I saw it as a special 146 and I love dark blue.

As you're fond of dark blue and write with the Le Petit Prince what ink do you use?

A Montblanc ink, or another ink which you feel suits the very special pen?

I'm using the Royal Blue in the Le Petit Prince (I found the Royal to complement the Prince :) ) and I also use the Midnight Blue in my regular, gold trim 146.

Now I'm considering buying the Homer blue, but I'm not sure about it, maybe I'll try some other brands as well, I don't know.

Thank you very much for explaining your ink choices.

Interesting that you've mentioned the newly released Montblanc Homer Greek Blue ink.

Very early this morning I wrote to a kind friend, seeking his assistance to oder a bottle of Greek Blue.

From the samples I've seen posted on-line, it looks like a hue which I'd enjoy using in any fountain pen.

I'm also interested in the three new inks introduced by Fritz Schimpf, in addition to their Fritzrot red ink.

Thank you for informing about Fritz Schimpf's inks, I didn't know about those!

I think you're referring to this set:

https://www.fritz-schimpf.de/Schreibgeraete/Tinte/Fritz-Schimpf-Vierer-Fuellhaltertintenset.html

The dark blue ("stormy blue", gewitterwolke) looks really awesome, it reminds me of MB Midnight Blue, but the blue is more present. I find the rest in the set equally pleasing. It's great to know about this option!

Thank you for the link above.

I hadn't known that the Fritz Schimpf inks were available in a set.
