Brass Fountain Pen Suggestion

Recommended Posts

I haven't bought a new pen in almost a year, and looking at my small collection, I've plastic, silver, titanium and steel but not brass.

A cursory google search and of the forums reveal several candidates Kawecos,Midori Travellers and my favourite, the Namisu Nova Brass. I like the Namisu but have so far avoided it because it doesn't have a clip.

Was wondering if anyone could suggest other brass pens, modern or vintage ? Pictures would be welcome as well

Most brass pens will be modern. Do you want to consider pens that have a brass body, but say a lacquer finish? Or solid brass only? Massdrop gets candidates from time to time. I just saw a listing for a titanium pen from them.

Personally, I prefer lighter pens. Only have one with a brass body underneath. A Levenger True Writer- some models fit the bill, but not all.

Off-hand, there's the slightly larger Kaweco clone, the Delike Alpha, Namisu Ixion, & its clone the Penbbs 350.

Solid brass. I'm more after the external appearance rather than the weight you get with brass bodies, as I'm comfortable with heavy and light pens.

I have both the Ixion and the PenBBS and I prefer the latter which is significantly less expensive and you can now get an Architects nib from the same supplier:

It's also worth checking out the PenBBS range there are some nice pens and he is a good supplier but if you fancy a more pocket sized brass pen the Kaweco Brass Sport is a good one; I've had one for a while and it's always been reliable, or possibly the Lilliput - I found the step down on the Supra too sharp to be comfortable.

The Delike is also nice, try and get a medium (0.7mm) for best results but it does benefit from a good polish (there are a few good posts online about renovating this pen).

If you're looking for something interesting, the Blackstone Maxim pens made in Queensland from recycled antique brass look a bit different! I stumbled across their site and have been intrigued ever since...

Peyton Street currently lists a brass Targa, model 1020 for $160.

Hi,

Whatever you do, just make sure that the brass in the pen does not contact ink especially if it is uncoated. Brass often corrodes when it touches ink.

Delika alpha. I've put mine through more abuse than a hundred people will in their lifetimes. I've popped a car windshield with it, even drove over it with my ambulance out of boredom to see if it could handle it (it did.)

that extra 10mm of barrel length makes it so much better. it takes a regular converter, it can be used unposted, and they come with an optional "bent" nib that is like an extra fine architect nib, and the QC on them is pretty amazing too. For $20, you can't go wrong. Just take the clip off when you get it and squeeze the sides so they touch, otherwise the clip can be a little slippery on the lacquered brass.

Selling a boatload of restored, fairly rare, vintage Japanese gold nib pens, click here to see (more added as I finish restoring them)

Sheaffer VFM is brass with a colored coating but only takes short int'l carts. $15-20 on ebay. Not terribly heavy but a little short to use unposted, the cap does post but I'd be afraid it would leave a rubbed mark on the barrel after a while.

Pelikan Stolla III is also brass with a clear resin over powered aluminum finish. Probably heavier than the VFM but takes long carts; cap does *not* post. $30-35 on ebay.

I have a Kaweco Liliput in brass and its by far my favorite modern Kaweco. They also do them in copper, stainless steel, and blued steel.

It's a cool pen because you can change the size of it by removing part of it's barrel. It also uses Kaweco's large nibs instead of the smaller one you get on the Sport.

Kaweco Supra, not Liliput?

The Loclen Electa comes in a brass version. I've got the black one, and it's a really well made pen, very comfortable to write with. Lots of innovative features too.

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

Xezo. I have two, a Phantasm Nebula and a Maestro LeGrande Dioptase. Fit and finish is phenomenal. Finished are diverse, deep, rich, and glassy smooth, but not slick. They are well balanced, which is absolutely essential in a Threads pen. Threads are THE smoothed out of any pen i own.

I was not a brass pen person. I had seen Xezo on Amazon and Ebay, but didn't think much about them other than very attractive finishes. They were brass, so no deal. Then I saw a SBREBrown video review of a Xezo, and looked into them. SBREBrown has 2 reviwed, and reviews can be found elsewhere including The Pen Habit. I hesitantly took the plunge. I'm still not a brass fp user. But I very much like and enjoy my Xezos.

Oh wow, I did not know that Blackstone did pens, I've purchased inks from the before but it must have been so long ago since I don't recall them making their own line of pens then. The Industrie Solid brass is becoming a strong contender.

Was not aware of that, thanks for the warning.
