Nyc Pen Shop

MontblancGeek

Recommended Posts

Hi, Everyone!

I am going to be visiting New York City in a couple weeks time and would love to go a reputable pen shop that might have pre owned Montblancs for sale. Any recommendations or dealers to visit while there? Thanks in advance for your help or comments.

Check fountain pen hospital downtown.

Thanks a lot! Will do. The website sure looks appealing.

The one and only FPH ;)

But I found "Art Brown" quite interesting as well.

Sadly, Art Brown is no longer in business. But its former owner now works at FPH several days a week.

Oh, didn't know that. It's quite a while that I haven't been in New York ...

I saw something about Art Brown reopening a few months ago. Can anyone confirm?

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

Didn't get a chance to check them out when I was in NYC over Christmas (partly due to timing), but the new Art Brown website seemed to mostly be selling high end leather goods and not much in the way of pens and inks when I looked at it last fall.

I did, however, make my annual pilgrimage to FPH.... B)

Thanks for all the replies! Indeed Art Brown has reopened in the Jewelry Plaza, and I did look at their webpage but they do not seem to carry Montblanc. And as Ruth mentioned not a whole lot of pens, inks and such. Still, if I can manage I will try to drop by and see. Thanks again!

Yes, I stand corrected. New owners at a new location near the old one reopened it. I haven't been there yet.

Art Brown that we used to know is no longer around. The "new Art Brown" is basically a very small stall selling ST Duponts. Unless you're really into the brand, it's not interesting for you.

With the exception of Fountain Pen Hospital, there are really no other place that sells anything used.

McNally Jackson Store: Goods For The Study, two locations - in the Village on 8th St, and a second location in SOHO on Prince St. Interesting student quality pens from Japan & Europe, plus many modern brands other than Montblanc. Extensive stationary department. The company also owns a nice bookstore around the corner from Prince St location. Both locations definitely cater to a hipster crowd, but each time I have visited, the folks there are extremely kind to this senior citizen.

Jason Office Supply, 31 St around the corner from Macy's. Montblanc, Waterman, Parker, Sheaffer, etc. All major brands in a traditional stationer-printer. Friendly folks who like to schmooze, family founded & owned for over 4 decades. Huge international-ethnic food court across street.

For something quite different, visit CW Pencil way, way downtown on Orchard St where Chinatown meets Lower East Side. It is a tiny store with an extensive internet business. The store is devoted to wooden pencils, new and vintage, from around the world, plus sharpeners, erasers, a few notebooks, & books related to pencils & handwriting. Young, very friendly workers. I love the place!

CW Pencil is a nice 15-20 minute walk from Fountain Pen Hospital past City Hall-federal buildings & into Chinatown. Remember that FPH is closed on Saturday & Sunday. FPH is only location I know of in NYC with pre-owned Montblancs. Ask for Ed in the back of the store.

I miss Art Brown. On the first day of our honeymoon during a previous century, I bought my wife the only 149 she has ever owned.

Enjoy your trip to one of the great cities of the world.

@gerico

Thanks for clearing that up about Art Brown. I am not into ST. DuPont so will be skipping the visit!

@Barry Gabay

Wow! Such a nice and detailed explanation of shops, some of which have definitely piqued my interest and sound wonderful. Thanks a lot for this! Will have to stop by them.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
