Handmade Envelopes

Recommended Posts

I have noticed recently that a few pieces of correspondence have been inside envelopes that look like they were handmade. Although I am not really an arts and crafty guy, I would be interested in making a few envelopes for my notes and letters. Maybe a little more on the masculine side.

Any one on the forum who makes their own? If so, how do you do it and are there instructions available? Thanks!

I make my own envelopes. Envelope templates are available, in different sizes, as is an envelope making kit from Hobby Lobby. They also sell fabulous books of papers that are ideal for making envelopes from. Whenever I visit Florida, a trip to Hobby Lobby is always high on my agenda. :)

What I tend to do is to very carefully take really nice envelopes apart, and draw around them onto a piece of card to make my own templates.

I bet there are plenty of instructions available online too. :)

There are some envelope templates available on ebay, but perhaps you should first decide on what size template you need, because you don't want to get one that's too small.

So it depends on what size paper you usually use, and how you want to fold your sheets. :)

There are also a lot of free printable envelope templates around online -- just print, cut on the lines, fold, glue. Of course, once you have one, you can embellish it with whatever kind of artwork you like.

One that the excellent folks at the Letter Writers Alliance recently shared is this one. While it sounds like it might not suit your personal style, it makes for a good starting point:

Thanks! I have been to her site before but missed the envelope making. Aside from the decoration, I like the design and instructions.

I have a little home made envelope making kit. A cousin (may he rest in peace) made it for me in the 70's. He had done one for himself by taking envelopes apart, tracing on a file folder and cutting and marking. I haven't used it in a while, but I know that there are three different sizes-fat standard (102 x 150 mm), small standard (92 x 166 mm), and thank you (83 x 109 mm). I could do up a couple of other sizes I use commonly (110 x 145 mm) and #10 (105 x 240 mm) These are sizes NOT counting the flaps on all four sides.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
