Difference Between 146 And 164 Ballpoint?

Bill Nick

Recommended Posts

These two pens appear to be identical to me, can anyone tell me the difference between the two models? Are they both designated Meisterstücks?

I have read in some places that the 164s only have 2 cap rings, yet the ones that I've seen for sale are pictured with three rings - once again, I'm confused!

All help appreciated!

Yes they are both Meisterstücks, so no specific differences between them other than the actual model numbers that show whether they are FP, BP or RB.

Montblanc Meisterstück 164 is a twist action BP with 3 cap bands as standard.

Montblanc Meisterstück 146 is a piston filling FP with 3 cap bands as standard.

Maybe I misunderstand what you are asking but there is no such thing as a 146 ballpoint. All 146s are fountain pens. Many people misidentify their pen and call them a 146 ballpoint.

You're right, I'm confused, and ignorant about MBs...but it's getting clearer now. As I now understand it, then a 164 BP will match my 146 FP in terms of size and styling, is that correct?

Is the 164 sometimes referred to as the Classique or is that a different model?

I appreciate the education, thanks!

Just noticed that the cap ring design is different between my FP and the 164 BP. The lower ring on the BP covers the end of the part that corresponds to the FP cap, the cap rings of the FP are set higher up exposing the lower part of the cap's plastic so presumably they cannot be considered to be FP and BP of the same model?

Oh bugger, this is getting so confusing again. I'm now looking at one described as a Le Grand 161 which has the matching cap ring design to the 146 FP.

Hi,

The rings don't have to cover the cap end on a 146 as the cap is a screw-on. Having the rings covering the cap end protects against cracks with push-on caps, this will apply to fountain pens or Rollerballs (apologies, originally wrote ballpoints)

The 164 ballpoint is a classique, (which matches a 144/145 fountain pen). If you want a match for a 146 Legrand fountain pen then you need a 161 ballpoint.

Just asking but what ballpoint pens does MB release in a LE set with a FP that is a 146?

I have never handled such a ballpoint pen....

It's worth noting that for a long time the 164 (along with the 165 Pencil) was the only size ballpoint to match all Meisterstück FPs. The 161 is a more recent addition to the range (late 1990s at a guess?).

Quite correct, and the 164 will match the 146 but not the size. It rather depends if that is important to you.

The 164 BP might sometimes be referred to as a Classique. I think it's a better size to go with a 146 FP than the 161 or Le Grand size BP. The 161 BP is bigger than it looks in pictures.

Thank you, that's what I needed to know. Got a 161 on it's way.

I don't understand that...how can the 164 ballpoint pen match two different FPs for size, eg 149 and 146, when the FPs are completely different sizes? Confused again!

Thanks, I'll just have to put up with the 161 that I ordered!

I know - madness! There was a time in prehistory when MB didn't even make a matching rollerball!!

There is no ballpoint pen to match the 149. The 161 is the same girth as the 146 and the cap is exactly the same size however the 161 is about 8mm longer than the 146. In the same way the 145 and 164 are the same size except that the 164 is about 5mm longer.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
