What, In Your Opinion, Is An "apocalypse Pen"?

The nukes are flying tomorrow, and you can choose any one fountain pen (doesn't have to be one you own) to take with you to survive the coming collapse. Make it last - it'll be your last modern writing instrument until society rebuilds, and that means it'll have to be durable enough to make it through without repairs or breaking.

 

What do you pick?

Monteverde tool pen obviously.

 

I mean, I have the rollerball and I find it very uncomfortable so I never use it, but if for some reason I was trying to survive the apocalypse (not sure I'd actually bother really) and for some reason I could only have one pen, and for some reason I didn't pick a permanent marker so I could, like, write on rocks and stuff... then I guess it would be the Monteverde tool fountain pen. That way at least I have a bubble level in case I need to build a bookshelf or something.

 

 

And a stylus tip in case I need to use a mobile phone and I've lost my fingers.

As much as I love my fountain pens, in such a scenario, I'd go with something like the Pininfarina Cambiano. Would be better off using that than my broad wet nibbed fountain pens on cheap paper

Well, you'd have around 20-30 minutes...

 

... so, I'd be reclining in my back yard; looking out at the ocean, (well, Great Egg Harbor), having a drink, saying a few prayers, calling a few very choice people for a quick "goodbye and I love you"... and preparing to meet my God.

 

Because I'd really rather not survive the attack.

 

But I would be wearing sun glasses and I'd have my first L2K in my pocket... just in case I survive it.

At first I thought of my rotring 600, but then I thought of pen/s with the fewest moving parts and no reliance on caartridges / converters: so that brings me to either an eye dropper or the capillary fill Parker 61 [Flighter.

In Heidelberg back in a international stress situation... HQ USAREUR and 7th Army were in Heidelberg....the number one Euro target. I lay in bed, and as I raised there was a brilliant flash. I fell back face into the pillow saying the 4 letter word..........Two bitter breaths later....I was still alive. The sun had struck a window across the street just right.

 

Since then I renewed my contract.....I get to take it all with me, wife, house and fountain pens....all of them.

They do have better single malt up there....but if only one pen....the 400nn OF maxi-semi-flex (I can survive with green stripe...in it holds more ink than my early '50's tortoise pens).......a big supply of scotch for bottles for the letters. Eventually, I may have to use Sherry bottles.

The most durable pen would be one that is easily serviceable, with nearly ubiquitous parts for replacements. It would be like the old Landrovers; parts were easily had, and you could have it fixed regardless of where you were in the world, regardless, since parts were easily sourced. I would be hard-pressed to say that fountain pens fall into any form of ubiquitous form. Ink would be hard to come by, and paper that would work well enough with what paper remains. Pencils would be an ideal form. Robust, but consumable, but still highly ubiquitous and writes in most conditions.

However, if something like this would be to happen, I'd rather go out in a blaze of glory with the initial thermonuclear blast than the horrors afterward.
