Purple Ink

I'm presently using Herbin Violet Pensee, I wondered if anyone can recommend a purple ink that is a bit darker? I have the Mont Blanc Lavender Purple, but it is almost black. I suspect it might have been a contaminated bottle. I am a teacher and I have to mark in purple, consequently it can't be too blue or too black.

Waterman Purple is pretty straightforward, inexpensive for regular use, safe and reliable.

Although I do like that Montblanc. :)

I'll second that Waterman Purple!

But a better option if it could be found it Lamy's Dark Purple! But the was a limited edition about a year or so ago!

Diamine Imperial Purple.

Diamine Imperial Purple bleeds through paper of bad quality. If your students or school use poor quality paper I suggest Pelikan 4001 Violett. Lovely color, a touch brighter than Imperial Purple.

DeAtrementis Alexander Hamilton (also named Aubergine) is a beautiful dark/deep purple, with good flow, moderately saturated, with a bit of shading, and dries moderately fast. I haven’t had any problems with feathering or bleeding even on cheap papers. No issues with clogging or nib creep for me.

I haven’t tried it yet, but Larmes de Cassis is a more intense purple if you’re not loving Violette Penseé. Pelikan Violet is also on my to try list. Kaweco Summer Purple and Poussieré de Lune from Herbin are probably too dark. Diamine Bilberry might suit too.

I’ve also found that some inks that appear hot pink in a swab or wash will appear purple in a fine nib. I don’t have enough samples of that to have solid recommendations but definitely check ink reviews if you don’t mind eye searing.

Waterman Purple, Diamine Amazing Amethyst, Imperial Purple, Herbin Poussiere de Lune, Violette Pensee have all put a smile on my face :)

Completely agree with your suggestion :-)

I have tried a LOT of purple inks. In my experience, Violette Pensee leans more towards the blue side of purple and is very bright.

Larmes de Cassis, as someone suggested, is pink rather than purple (though its a pink that leans towards purple), and its quite a light color so its probably not going to suit.

Rohrer & Klingner Cassia is a good purple thats darker but still very bright. The color leans a bit towards blue rather than pink.

I really like the color of Monteverde Amethyst. Its a nice middle purple with some good shading. Definitely more purple and darker than Violette Pensee.

KWZ Gummiberry, like Violette Pensee, is very bright, but it leans far more towards the pink end of things. What it sounds like youre looking for is more along the lines of KWZ Berry, which is darker. It also leans more towards the pink side of purple. Its a gorgeous color and one of my favorites!

Nemosine Alpha Centauri is another nice purple. Leans more towards the blue side and is a bit greyer, so is a lot more subtle than Violette Pensee.

As someone else mentioned, De Atramentis Alexander Hamilton is a wonderful purple, though you might find it a little too dark, since you find Lavender Purple to be too dark. Hamilton flows very generously (as do most DA inks), though. Its another one of my favorites.

Pilot Iroshizuku Murasaki-shikibu is also a nice purple, but brighter. It leans more towards the pink side.

The Herbin Violet Pensee is a stunning colour and much more 'interesting' than the Montblanc Lavender which is darker and more subdued. Perhaps it is aimed at a more professional market...where 'fun' colours might be frowned upon.

I have a couple of purples - Akkerman Voorhout Violet, Levenger Amethyst and a couple (samples) that I don't recall names of at the moment. Oh, I do have samples of Lamy Dark Lilac which was referred to earlier. In the pens I have tried it in, it was very dark. For your use among the three I would likely choose Levenger Amethyst. Great color and behaves well.

This link is to a Inky TOD with lots of purples including writing samples.

Hope it helps.

I'm on a bit of a purple kick myself right now. So you're talking to the right guy!

Favorite purple: Private Reserve Tanzanite.

One of the most unique purples to me is Noodler's Purple Heart, but that may be a bit expensive to get if you aren't in the US.

I've got a test vial of Iroshizuku Yama Budo, which I am very pleased with.

I am currently looking to get a bottle of Private Reserve Arabian Rose, which is supposedly pretty nice as well.

My company's color is Diamine Majestic Purple, which is a very noticable purple. I keep a demonstrator pen inked up with it all times for work (advertising).

Waterman Purple has already been mentioned, but I agree it is a good purple, just not enough personality for my tastes.

It's only available in standard int'l cartridges, and I've only found it one place, but ST Dupont's Purple boasts surprising range and good looks. Very underrated and unknown by most people. I've only got 2 left of a 6 pack I bought last year.

And lastly, your current purple: J. Herbin's Violette Pensee is my correspondence ink. It has a fascinating history and I'd love to learn more about it (I wish J Herbin would be more forthcoming about the history of their inks -- I'd read that book). When I write someone a letter and it is in that color, people remember it.

Hope that helps a bit.

On the dusty violet side of purple sits R&K Scabiosa, a favourite IG ink. I have one pen always filled with some shade of violet, on this present rotation: a Pelikan 4001 violet cart.

I love and would recommend Diamine Imperial Purple!

Thanks to all, Ive tried the Diamine Imperial Purple- it's absolutely brilliant. Far less feathering, even on cheap paper, than the Herbin and I love the colour. I will try some of your other recommendations in the future.

For an affordable price, I also would recommend Diamine Imperial Purple. I had no problem with it, even with cheap office paper, but obviously, the nib size is a factor as well. My old favorite barely lost the battle with Sailor Kobe Sannomiya Panse. Although they close to each other.

My every-day ink: Private Reserve Purple Mojo. Darkly saturated, defiantly purple. Too wet flowing for some of my pens.

Must be out of fashion, nobody has mentioned it yet.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
