Wahl Eversharp Hand Engraved Metal Pens

Hi, Folks!

Since this is not a machine turned design, I thought I would start a new photo thread for hand engraved Wahl and Tempoint metal pens. Please post yours here!

This is a Wahl Tempoint model 520C Hand Engraved Design sterling silver ringtop fountain pen c. 1919. Each Wahl Tempoint Hand Engraved Design pen has a very detailed and deeply cut flower and leaf pattern on the cap and barrel. The barrel has an oval bordered cartouche for personalized engraving. There are no maker's marks on the cap and barrel, but both are stamped STERLING. The cap is also stamped PAT. JUL 5 1904 and the barrel is stamped PAT. JAN 25 1904. This 3 5/8 inch long pen is the smaller of two ringtop pens and is normally equipped with a Number 2 nib and sold for $10.00 in 1919. This example has a Number 3 size 14 karat gold nib, likely a replacement or upgrade. This version of the Hand Engraved Design pen, where the cap is larger in diameter than the barrel, appears in the 1919 catalog as a Tempoint model. Wahl began using the Wahl name on these pens in 1921 and the cap and barrel design continued through 1922.

Wahl Tempoints are essentially Bostons as Wahl was smart enough not to mess up a good thing. Here is a sterling hand engraved Boston.

This is a Wahl Hanlin Design gold filled medium size clip fountain pen c. 1921-1924. The Hanlin Design combined machine and hand engraved work and was offered from 1921 to 1924. Hanlin is a variation of the Ribbon Design, done in panels, with hand engraving done in the remaining blank panels. This 4 15/16 inch long pen is the medium size slender model with a 14 karat gold Number 2 size nib. The Hanlin Design appears in the 1921 through 1924 catalog only on solid gold pens. This may be an off catalog pen. The barrel has a rectangular blank in one of the machine engraved panels.

Real gold pens might be lighter than gold-filled and perhaps more fragile.

What totally swell pens!!

Real gold pens are heavier that gold filled and you can tell solid gold by the weight in your hand, not that they are enormously heavy but, there is a difference. I don't understand the fragile comment at all. Metal pens of the teens and twenties seem to have held up well for pens that old.

Is it wrong to marry a man for his pen collection?

Who is it you want to marry? The photographer, or the man with the collection?

Hi All,

I just managed to get my hands on this. As I am very new to this, would appreciate as much advice as I can get.

1. Can you guys help identify the exact model/ vintage for this...

2. Can you advise what needs to be done to restore this baby into her former glory?

3. Does the nib look right?

This is more of a hobby for me, and my first foray into vintage restoration... so any help is deeply appreciated.

Beautiful pen, Jim. I might have one in a ring top. I'd say someone has had this open as, in my experience, the Wahl is 180 degrees different from a Sheaffer in that the indecia was aligned with the nib and not the lever.

Interesting - did not know that. I don't have the pen, it was loaned, so I should have checked that.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
