Student Notebook Reccomendations

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I hope the holidays treated you well!

I am looking for some recommendations for FP-friendly notebooks. The spring semester is rapidly approaching and I will have to get new notebooks for classes. I was introduced to good paper as a Christmas gift, so I am looking to get something other than my typical 5 Star notebooks for this coming semester.

Any recommendations for a notebook that is enjoyable to write on, while also cost-effective enough to purchase multiple?

Thank you!

When I was in undergrad I was using wirebound rhodia notebooks. Relatively cheap, easy to use, and superb paper. Clairefontaine is another option, but it's a little bit more expensive.

The Apacia brand has a notebook about 7”x10” 100 sheets. Paper not quite as attractive/white as the less page versions. There might be reviews on Apacia from years ago. Think they can be found in some of the Japanese stores. I live far from cities so no experience. Use to get in large packs from an eBay seller.

If you can find it in the US, Black n Red notebooks are good value for the money, and fountain pen friendly.

Another fan of Black N Red notebooks. I pick mine up at Office Depot/OfficeMax stores. In fact, just picked one up earlier this week. I use the A4 (11.75 x 8.25)24 lb/90 gsm paper lined 140 pages. Pages are perforated so you can pull them out pretty easy. I think I paid about $10.

Another notebook I use are the Made in Brazil composition books. A lot cheaper, but the paper isn't as good as the Red N Black either. The Brazil ones are becoming more difficult to source though. When I looked the other day, I saw mostly Egypt and Vietnam books. I am not sure how those compare to the Brazil ones.

Miquelrius spiral bound notebooks can often be found at college bookstores or Barnes & Noble, and are very fountain pen friendly, the 6 x 8 version has 300 pages and is ~ $6, it could hold two classes worth of notes I imagine. The 8 x 11 is about ~$8.95, with ~150 pages I think.

Composition notebooks have often been found to be rather good with fountain pens too. Searching the forum for these will provide a few that worked well for others.

Kokuyo campus notebooks are pretty decent as well, Jetpens sells them in packs of five for a reasonable price.

FP Ink Orphanage-Is an ink not working with your pens, not the color you're looking for, is never to see the light of day again?!! If this is you, and the ink is in fine condition otherwise, don't dump it down the sink, or throw it into the trash, send it to me (payment can be negotiated), and I will provide it a nice safe home with love, and a decent meal of paper! I can attest to the goodness of Black n Red notebooks. Another brand I've used that was both cost-effective and FP-friendly: Environotes recycled paper notepads. Have tested it with pens up to wet Western mediums with minimal bleedthrough or feathering.

Additionally, if you can find any notebooks made with sugarcane paper, do give them a try - I've found most types and brands of sugarcane paper to be FP-friendly. They are also usually cheap, being made with recycled waste material from the sugar industry.

Happy New Year and may your upcoming semester go smoothly! Cheers.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
