Lamy 2000 Repairs / Nib Exchange

frayed

Recommended Posts

hello -

i have several lamy 2000 fps that i would like to get a nib exchange for. based on some posts on fpn (such as https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/294976-lamy-2000-f-nib-exchange/?p=3427775), i was led to believe that lamy usa support would fulfill this exchange if the nib was in like-new condition. the two lamy 2000 fps (millennium and mercedes) have never been used.

so i called lamy usa a couple of weeks ago, and it seems that i had called the previous / current distributor filofax / rediform (lamyusa.com), who advised me that they would no longer be the distributor at the end of the year, and to contact lamy germany directly since they did not know who the new distributor was. however, they said they never offered such a replacement service - which seems odd given the past experience of other members! they were only able to sell me new nibs, but said that they had run out of ef nibs.

so i emailed lamy germany through their website, hoping to get some confirmation that repairs were possible if i sent it to germany, but the first email did not get anywhere. i sent another last weekend, and instead got a response from a representative from universal luxury brands (ulbrands.com) who seem to be the new lamy usa distributor. however, i got the same response as they only offered to sell new nibs for replacement and there was no mention of a replacement program. unfortunately, the representative does not seem to know the lamy 2000 family well, as i was quoted a price for a steel replacement nib in response to my query about my steel lamy 2000 mercedes fp.

should i attempt to send them to heidelberg directly, following the comments in https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/327738-my-lamy-2000-experience/?p=3923791?

Hello Frayed,

I think that program might have been exclusive to Filofax... I think they were doing it to compete with Parker's nib exchange program. Unfortunately, I have some doubts if the new distributor will continue the program.

With this change of distributors, everything is up in the air right now. I would hold off and make due with the pens as they are now; rather than risk losing them in the current shuffle and shake-up.

There also seems to be a little turbulence right now in the Lamy organization in general... and they've come across as being a little off their game lately. Give everyone a couple of months to let the dust settle and then try it again. :)

All that said, Lamy in Heidelberg would probably take care of it if there was a problem with the nib, but for a case of "buyer's remorse"; i.e., just changing your mind and deciding you'd rather have a different nib... I'm not so sure??? But there's no harm in trying. :D

well, i am not sure if rediform was the previous distributor, but that seems to be the case based on the addresses. the forum post points to rediform, so i was a little taken aback when they said they never offered the service.

as for buyer's remorse... i don't know if it counts, but the mercedes lamy 2000 is only sold in f. considering that i find the ef already slightly too wide for me, i was either swap the nib and get to use it, or keep it in storage. as for the millennium edition broad that i have, it was the only millennium edition fp that i have seen on ebay for the last few years, and also one of the last few lamy 2000s i did not have in my collection - which is now complete (except for the red ones, obviously).

another complication is that i am moving to singapore shortly - which makes sending it to heidelberg directly more attractive given the difference in postage rates. but i suppose i could reach out to the singapore distributor and see what they say.

Hi Frayed,

Well, if can find the nib itself for sale somewhere,... the 2000's nib can be swapped by the owner... it's not that difficult. In fact, finding the EF nib would probably be your biggest hurdle.

Just to follow-up,...

Here's a good video on how to do it:

This said, I would still try to go through "official channels" first and save this as a last resort... doing it yourself would most likely void the warranty. ;)

Frayed I have just swapped out a 2000 fine nib with an extra fine nib I had purchased. Whilst not as easy as say swapping a nib on a Studio or Safari there is certainly no great difficulty in making the replacement.

There are video explanations available to guide you the relatively easy process. If you are still in doubt use your phone to photograph each step as you go through it as a record of where everything goes and use the reverse process when putting the pen back together. Reseating the chrome cap locking washer is something that must be done properly as that is what keeps the cap in place.

The five or tens minutes it took to swap the nibs is well worth the effort. I have two 2000's, both were fine nibs, I had not used them much since discovering the joy of Asain fine nibs as the western fine seemed far too broad by comparison. The extra fine is silky smooth, as you'd expect and an absolute joy to write with.

In Australian dollars the nib is about 50% of the cost of a new pen, but in my opinion well worth it.

  • 1 month later...

This thread is a bit old, so maybe you already took care of your pens somehow, but here are my two cents. At least in Europe Lamy does indeed exchange your nib free of charge as long as your current nib is, as they say, "recyclable". The 2000 nibs are not sold separately as spare parts, so you'd have to send your pen(s) to Heidelberg.

I just had this done on my own Lamy 2000 and they did a great job. Just be aware that, as you noticed, they are pretty slow in answering emails.

From what I've heard, Rediform was not quite ready to be a Lamy distributor. Lamy Bob, who was the repair guy at Filofax had all kinds of parts, properly marked and sorted for pens going way back. All of that got screwed up when Rediform took over. A new distributor may be a good thing.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
