De Atramentis Pigeon Blue - Compact Review

Early in 2014 I picked up a sample of this ink and it was the driest ink I'd ever used. I couldn't get it out of my pen fast enough. Might be different now.

I like the color, but not flying rats. The name puts me off.

Taubenblau in a way sounds better then Pigeon Blue

 

The ink didn't appear to me as exceptionally dry. The Pelikan is a fire hose... but writing with the dip pen was not especially dry. I do not describe it with my reviews because it is subjective and depends on pen, paper, hand etc.

I've used this ink for years and never had a problem with it in terms of dryness or anything else. I have other inks in this color group that are more exciting, but it is a nicely behaved, pleasantly colored ink.

A friend and fellow ink addict left a sample for me a couple of weeks ago, while she was visiting my wife. I'm a fan of blue-greens (and green-blues; those were my favorite Crayola colors when I were a lad), so I decided to give it a try when next I had an available pen (which turned out to by one of my Lamy AL-stars).

 

While it's not quite as lubricating as I might like, I have to say that I'm really loving it. The deep-teal/grey color is beautiful, and I very much like the shading. Also, it seems to be significantly less prone to after-drying smudging on Tomoe River than a lot of the other inks I use. I have a bad habit of resting my off hand on the verso page of my notebook while writing on the recto, and (possibly due to hand sweat; possibly due to skin oils; possibly because I just exude low-grade noxious chemicals) I tend to notice I've done that only after I've already smudged the ink. Thus far, though I haven't been more mindful of where my off hand rests, I haven't seen any of that with Pigeon Blue.

 

I've gotten my second fill from the sample, and there's an excellent chance I'll be putting in an order for a bottle in the near future.
