Platinum Carbon Pen With Classic Barrel And Cap?

Gunther

Recommended Posts

Hello,

The Platinum Carbon Pen has become one of my favourite fountain pens. Is there a pen from Platinum which has the same nib and feed (and is therefore suitable for the Carbon ink too) but comes with a more classic barrel and cap?

The Platinum #3776 series is designed to use Carbon ink.

Quoting from Cult Pens

"An additional benefit of the Slip and Seal cap is that Platinum approve the use of their pigment inks in these pens. Platinum pigment inks are waterproof and lightfast but are risky to use in normal pens unless you clean the pen out after every use. Platinum guarantee that Platinum Slip and Seal pens are safe to use with Platinum Carbon and pigment inks as your everyday ink."

Will work for pens...

Note the term "everyday ink". You will still need to use the 3776 at least once every couple of days to keep the ink flowing properly.

Sailor Kiwaguro Carbon ink is, in my opinion, a better behaved ink than Platinum's Carbon ink, as it is made with smaller carbon particles.

A new version with a clip? I haven't heard of it before, and it looks like it isn't listed on the Platinum website yet. Do you happen to have some details?

Thank you for the link. Do you mean the DPQ-700A? As far as I know it neither new nor a successor to the Carbon Pen (but I may be wrong).

Algester's comment reminded me. I've been using Platinum Carbon cartridge in a 0.5 Preppy for a couple of years and it's still working fine. (Obviously an empty cartridge syringe-filled with Carbon would work too.) I haven't tried either of the finer Preppy pens with it yet, but will go ahead and do that now. Hopefully someone has and can comment.

Will work for pens...

it was quite new as it was introduced with in this year it's basically a preppy section with a preppy cap with a desk pen body

So that means that, given that I hate the EF/UF nibs it comes with, I can replace it with a normal Fine Preppy nib?

yep but obviously you can't do the same thing on the DP-800S unless both section share the same threading on the section Edited by Algester

They don't. The desk pen is smaller diameter than the Preppy.

Excuse me, I have a question about desk pens in general.

Why would somebody need or want to write with a desl pen if one has several fountain pens available already on their desk daily? What are the benefits of using a desk pen as a daily writer?

This particular desk pen has an exquisite extra fine nib and is designed to use Platinum Carbon ink (wonderful with watercolour) so artists love them as sketching pens. It's also very cheap.

The only downside is the desk pen shape which makes it awkward to take anywhere. I still take mine out because it's that good.

I think for normal people the shape is meant to look elegant sitting in a holder on a desk.

I see. So, since I use my pens only for writing, I can choose any other Platinum pen that has this same EF nib and I should get the same experience. Noted. Thank you!

  • 1 month later...

I just bought 11 bottles of different waterproof fountain pen ink (Platinum Carbon and Noodler's bulletproof together with 18 medium nib and 18 fine nib Platinum Preppy fountain pens. I also invested in 18 Platinum converters to put inside the pens to draw the ink from the bottles. I would like to use one type of colored waterproof/bulletproof ink in each Platinum Preppy fountain pen. Do you think that the waterproof/bulletproof inks that I listed above will work well in the Platinum Preppy fountain pens that I bought? Also, do you think that the converters will work well inside the Platinum Preppy fountain pen?

I use Platinum Carbon ink in a Preppy without any problems.

You might try Sailor nano kiwa guro (if you want black). I've had its sister Sei Boku in multiple pens with no problem whatsoever.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
