Drastic Temperature Changes Can Damage My Pens?

Hello there!

Recently I decided to carry my pens to work, at the office we have Air Conditioner and we stay comfy at around 23°C which is nice and cool for me, the problem is when I leave in the afternoon, I get on my car and the temperature outside is usually from 35 to 40°C.

I know that with that temperature changes the ink evaporates at some degree and expand, some ink is showing afterwards on the nibs, but I am a little concern if I keep carrying my pens back and forth everyday exposing them to this kind of drastic changes of temperature, eventually they will suffer some damage. Maybe nothing will happen, but I would like to hear from you if this is something you already discussed.

By the way, I am concern only of my nicest pens, piston fillers (149's, Viscontis).

Have a good day.

Luis A.

On a sunny, summer Texas afternoon, the temperature in a closed automobile can reach 60ºC.

Do you have air conditioning in your car ? 70ºF to 104ºF is the equivalent range of temperatures. Incidental exposure to 100ºF air temperature should not harm your pen. Long-term exposure might cause warping. How do you transport your pens ? However, temperature increase can affect the air, inside the ink reservoir. Transport the pen nib-up, so expanding air does not push ink out of the nib.

Don't leave the pen in the car. Place the pen in an eyeglasses case, or toothbrush carrier, and wrap with a wet paper, for the drive home. (Evaporating water is very effective cooling.)

Auf freiem Grund mit freiem Volke stehn.
Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen:
Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

I’m in Florida and no problems (we are in the triple digits today). So long as you do not leave your pens in the car to warp into a banana shape, you’ll be fine.

Hi Sasha,

Yes I do have air conditioner on my car, it's just a short period of time when my pens are exposed to the heat, I carry my pens in a leather pen pouch in my pants or shirt pocket; I never leave my pens in the car, just the idea of that to happening is like a nightmare to me! Thanks for the reply.

Ghost Plane,

Thank you for your comment, I baby my pens so I don't think they will spend some time alone in the car.

Thanks again for the replies, cheers from south-east México.

I carry one of my fountain pens on me wherever I go. It has always been fine even in very hot and cold weather. A rule of thumb: Anywhere a human being can go, a Meisterstück 149 will most likely be fine.

That's a good one Meiers, I think so too!

leaving your pen in the car can be deadly!

Farazqamar, I hope that never happens! not even with the cheaper plastic pens!
