Parker 51 Photo Thread

Hi, Folks!

This is a Parker 51 Vacumatic Custom in Cedar Blue with 1/10 16K gold filled Blue Diamond cap date coded 1946. Usually Custom caps were 1/10 12K gold filled. Note that this pen's Blue Diamond has been repainted. Unfortunately the paint work got onto the diamond border as can be seen under a loupe, something to take note when getting a pen serviced if it needs this done. There are multiple versions of the Custom cap. This one has sets of four vertical lines separated by a plain band, probably the most common version. This 5 3/8 inch long pen has the clear plunger filler unit and sold for $15.00.

I need to get a Navy Grey so I can photograph them side by side. Same questions happen with Sheaffer Snorkel blue and green pens. Easy to see in a side by side shot. If someone wants to loan one for photos I can shoot them together.

Thanks! I definitely have a Navy Gray one, then -- it does look sort of greenish grey, as opposed to the Dove Gray, which looks more of a true gray.

My Aero P51´s

Could someone explain the difference between Dove Gray and Navy Gray? I have an English-made Aero that I bought last summer (mostly because of the OB nib ) -- but I really dislike the color. It was listed in the auction as being Navy Grey, but looks a lot like the color of the one in the photo Jim posted (and is definitely an Aero, not a Vac). I saw one on eBay a few weeks ago that was listed as being Dove Grey, which looked a lot lighter color in the listing photos -- but I know that photos can be really deceptive sometimes, depending on stuff like ambient lighting and using a flash up close.

You know, perhaps I'm showing my age but I sure appreciate the understated colors of the Parker 51 line... not much for the swirly unicorn poop materials a lot of pen lines have gone to these days.

You know, perhaps I'm showing my age but I sure appreciate the understated colors of the Parker 51 line... not much for the swirly unicorn poop materials a lot of pen lines have gone to these days.

 

Yeah, I think I kinda agree with you. Too many modern brands of pens that have those sorts of acrylics for barrels are indistinguishable from each other. And a lot of the swirly ones in particular look like multicolored calamari... (or, worse yet, like multicolored rubber bands).

This is a Parker 51 Aerometric Signet in Black with the converging lines pattern 1/10 12K gold filled cap c1954-1956. This pen has no date code, but was dated by having the matching cap activated 51 Jotter Ballpoint, introduced in 1954. This 5 3/8 inch long pen has the press 4 times Aerometric filler unit and sold for $19.75.

I always enjoy these threads, thanks penhero. I have a mix of aeros and vacs, and love them all.

 

It's hard for me to understand how Parker got the 2002 issue so right aesthetically and so wrong "plastically", when there are countless cheap knockoffs that don't crack their barrels.

not quite the concours condition of some of the above, but certainly of interest to 51 collectors in the U.K. - the rolled sterling cap aero 51 with g.f. clip - apparently made in England only.

According to the book, first introduced 1952 with simply 'R. SILVER on the cap, then a slightly later version where the cap imprint is changed to read 'R. SILVER / MADE IN ENGLAND'. Perhaps someone might have a little more info. on the dates for these two varieties.

This pen looks to be the later version.
