Guten Tag From Texas

Greeting s from another San Antonio creature - just retired from the military and started second career here. Spent some time stomping around Germany and had a ball. Still remnants of the German heritage here in Gruene, New Braunfels, etc.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

- Winston Churchill

Welcome and my sincere apologies for our brutal summers. Although this summer has been unusually mild. At least you are in the "dry" heat of North Texas. :P

I'm down near the Gulf where we have "air you can wear" most days. Have fun on FPN. Isn't wonderful having grown up with the knowledge of fountain pens? I hope we (the community at large) are keeping alive as valid everyday tools vs. just jewelry or artists' implements.

Welcome to our warm nook of the internet, where you can share this beautiful hobby with good and friendly people. Or as we say in low Saxon: Mooi a'j dr bint! (Good you're here.)

Welcome to FPN.

I love Germany and the pens it produces. Pelikan, MB and GvFC are at the top of the list of my favorites.

But

... Overall I would say I am more of a daily user than a collector - at least so far. ...

we can help you fix that problem :D .

And as for

... where else to look for that than the Land of the Rising Sun...

you can look at vintage. Waterman has some amazing fine nibs. Much better than the ones currently available anywhere, IMO. And, if you don't want flex, you can get their firm nibs dirty cheap.

I am in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and originally from Berlin. What parts of Texas have you been to? I still can't get used to the summer heat around here...

For what it's worth, I'm a native and still not used to the summer heat. Don't think I ever will be.

Wellkommen from yet another Texan! I am not too far from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

I haven't read all the responses here - Maybe someone has told you that there is a pen club in Dallas? And a Dallas Pen Show in September every year?

Well, that makes me feel a little bit better.

Thank you for the welcome! I have heard about the pen club, but really don't now much about it. Also, I was going to attend the pen show last year, but could not due to a scheduling conflict. I know it does not compare to LA, but sounds like it is pretty decent. Hopefully I'll make it this year.

Yeah, that's what I am afraid of. :D Thanks!

Florian, the Dallas Pen Collectors information is on the Dallas Pen Show web site: http://www.dallaspenshow.com/wp/

You should give them your email address so you will be notified of meetings, etc. I don't go to the regular meetings because they're on a weeknight, and I'm way over in southwest Fort Worth, but they do have pretty regular informal Saturday morning breakfast meetings at a restaurant in North Plano, and I try to make it over for those. We would love to have you join us, and I do hope you can make it to the Pen Show this year. We also have a Pelikan Hub group that meets annually, and Lisa Vanness sometimes will have a get-together when she comes to the Dallas market to buy for the store.

There is a fledgling Fort Worth Pen Club that has been started by Larry Berrones, and I am delighted that it meets only a mile from my office! The next meeting is this coming Monday--let me know if you need information.

There's a lot to see here in Texas, it's a fair size. We have some pretty impressive canyons and a fair coastline and kinda mountains and even a had drawn ferry still in use between the US & Mexico.

Ive been to the exact area you are, and as far south as San Antonio. You are so right about the heat in Texas. I visited for a family wedding in late July. It was miserable because the wedding was outdoors.

But lets see, Ive been to Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Grapevine, The Colony, Lewisville, Flower Mound, Denton.

I live in Missouri, and along the Missouri River in the center of the state has been nicknamed Rhineland. A lot of German immigrants stopped there, giving towns names like Hermann, Augusta and Dutzow.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
