I Hope I Didn't Get Ripped Off

Hi all and thanks for your continued support. The pen got in tonight, and I am disappointed to say the least. The pen is very scratched up. Each pic is a different area (and not different angles of the same scuff mark). I'll let the pics tell the story. I'm going to read all the articles to find out what year this pen really is. I don't believe this pen comes close to the add, in either year of the pen nor the condition of the pen. What does everyone else think? The following is the classified add from this site.

I have for sale Montblanc 149 with a really nice 18C Fine nib from 1960's.

The pen is in very good condition, fills properly and hold a lot of ink.

It has a true 18C Fine nib that writes smooth and gives huge line variation.

The piston is made from plastic.
No skipping or issues even after not using the pen in weeks.

The pen has minimal signs of use microscratches on pen surface and some scratches on barrel, no cracks or dents.

I am asking 499 usd which includes worldwide registered (signed for) delivery, of course offers welcomed.

The advert states it has some scratches on barrel, and it surely does. I wouldn't have said it's in 'very good condition' but just 'good condition' because of those scratches.

 

Should that nib & feed be located a bit further into the feeder case? Also, it looks more like an EF nib than a F nib to me.

 

I would definitely want to return it if I had paid that price.

I had a similar situation with an FPN vendor in the classifieds. The pen I received writes very nicely so I chose to keep it. After polishing it up mine actually looks pretty good and I'm happy with the pen. That said - I paid considerably less than your listed price.

It's a 50yo pen, ppls... I'd rather it arrive unpolished than overpolished like some dealer pens. At least then I can polish it myself to the degree of shininess that I like, not gleaming unnatural like a 2c dime.

At the price paid, it should have been in better condition for a 1970s pen. I'd agree with you if it was $300 and wrote well.

I agree with Chrissy the nib and feed are not set correctly, which to me means they have been removed at some point by someone without the proper tools or technique.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I have emailed the vendor for a return and will let you know the response. I stated many factors, including all that were mentioned in this thread. Nib not properly set, pen from the 1970's not the 1960's, EF instead of a F, and too many scratches, some deep, to be considered in very good condition. I didn't mention previously, but the feed looks brand new, which is another indication that somebody has monkeyed around with the setup without the proper skills.

 

Thanks again everyone. I want to make my first 149 purchase a good one and after seeing the wonderful help from this community, I certainly want to join the club at some point in time!

Seriously, if you're after a perfect sojourn into the Mont Blanc luxury lifestyle, it's probably worth paying the full whack for something brandnew from a MB boutique or AD.

 

Don't buy usedees if you haven't already got one in hand & know every common ailment you should look out for on a used example.

Yeah too rich for my blood for any used pen, even anything made out of precious plastic but agreeing to the price was OP's own prerogative, not my biz to comment how he spends his dosh
