Jowo #6 1.1 Mm- Thoughts?

Hi all!

Relatively new to the FPN, and looking for people's opinions on the JoWo nibs, especially the 1.1 mm stub?

I am having a pen made, and the supplier uses JoWo nibs. I'm very keen to try a 1.1 stub, and have heard good things about these nibs when in TWSBI and as sold by Goulet Pens. Does anyone have experience using these nibs? Do the standard JoWo nibs differ from the Goulet/Edison/etc nibs more than just the laser engraved logo?

And lastly, does anyone have a writing example of the 1.1? I have done the google search, but most of the results are either the branded versions, or quite old!

Kind regards!

I have a few JoWo stub nibs, both branded (Goulet, Edison) and unbranded, 1.1mm and 1.5mm I haven't noticed a significant difference between the branded and unbranded nibs, except that I had to make some adjustments (tine alignment) to the latter. Edison and Goulet both seem to do their own additional QC and adjusting for flow and smoothness.

Not at home right now, unfortunately, so I can't provide a writing sample - but will see what I can do a bit later this afternoon / evening.

Ah awesome! That is what I hoped :)

How do you find writing with them? Is it wet/dry, smooth/toothy?

That would be amazing :D

GT,

A writing sample of the 1.1 mm Jowo is in this review. I like it, but the 1.5 gives me better line variation without too much extra width.

Thank you Bobje for the link!

I have fairly small handwriting, so I am hesitant to go larger than a 1.1. Do you also have an example of 1.5 handwriting readily available? :)

As promised, here's a comparison between 3 of my JoWo nibs (one branded by Edison, the other two 'generic'). Sorry I can't offer more than this - I'm away from home for a few days, and these are the only JoWo #6 nibs I brought with me!

With the size of my handwriting, I can use the 1.1mm stub (just barely) for regular-to-large-(for me) lettering, but the 1.5mm is really a bit big. I use my 1.5mm pens more for headings and the like... Definitely more line variation, though!

Thank you very much! I think the 1.1 shows a nice amount of variation for daily writing, and I think that is the way I will go :)

The Jowo nibs are standard other tHan decoration and maybe tuning, as noted. The 1.1 is a good everyday stub for me and offers reasonable variation while still being very forgiving. I recommend it as a low cost way to see if you like stubs as the units are easily swapped and new nibs are not very expensive.

Unless you are considering a tipped stub cut by a Nibmeister, a Jowo 1.1 is a decent option and can be easily replaced if you are unhappy with it.

My writing is more controlled with a Jowo 1.1 in an Asa Nauka than for example with a 1.1 Rotring Art-Pen. I am not sure if it is the Jowo 1.1 that is quite "tight", or the added heft of the Nauka which explains this.

The JoWo 1.1 Stub is an excellent nib. Mine is a nib unit on my ASA Nauka. The nib was slightly dry, that I have worked on and is now much wetter, since I prefer nibs slightly on the gushing side. Smoothness wise, its great. Get the nib, you won't be disappointed there.

Like them well enough to have two. One standard and the other made a little wetter and crisper.

Add lightness and simplicate.

Personally I don't love untipped stubs (which basically all steel stubs are)

I just don't think they make my handwriting look good. I have a bunch though, Goulet and TWSBI and Nemosine, and I find zero real difference in any of them. a 1.1mm nail is a 1.1mm nail.

For clarity. You have three objections? Or is it the combination?

I don't object that they're all essentially the same nib, there's nothing ostensibly wrong with it.

I just don't like untipped stubs because I find they wear down a bit and are prone to begin catching after a few months. I notice the change.

And I also just don't think they work for my handwriting.

My objections are just personal gripes, however. They in no way are meant to tell anyone that untipped steel 1.1 stubs are bad or not worth it.
