Fp Friendly Pocket Notebook

Recommended Posts

Hello my fellow fountain pen addicts!

I'm about to begin my residency training and was told that I should have a small notebook on me at all times to jot down any wisdom the attending physician imparts on us. So I was curious as to what notebooks that would fit into a white coat pocket and are FP friendly you would recommend. For reference, and iPad mini barely fits into one, but was hoping for something a bit smaller (but not quite midori passport sized traveler's notebook size)

Thanks in advance!

Check out the Rhodia pads... FP friendly in about any size and configuration you want... given your need I wonder if a top bound may work more easily than a regular notebook if you are writing on the fly and while standing. Congrats on your residency.... you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I know there are doctors on this site and they may have some thoughts as well.

Top-bound is a good idea, also spiral-bound unless you plan to rip the pages out. One of these might work well. If you want a bound book, Rhodia make some nice pocket-sized notebooks, and I assume the Leuchtturm are pretty good too (more subject to show-through, in my experience) - here's some examples.

Clairefontaine notebooks, approx. 3½ x 5½ inches are very nice. I ordered a dozen from Gouletpens. More convenient, still, are the miniature "Composition" notebooks, from the dollar store. I use bound notebooks only, so "cheap" associates are not tempted to demand pages of my notebook for scratch paper .

Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen:
Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

Should you decide to use a book like notebook vs top bound, remember you can turn the notebook 90 degrees and write. I find that easier to do than writing across the two facing pages when I need longer space.

While a huge lover of FPs (you should see my 'one's good 10-20 better of each model' collection) I'll switch to ballpoint/gel or pencil in different situations. Likewise different grades of paper per situation including riteintherain notebooks when things get sloppy.

Best on your residence

I'm a fan of the Franklin Christoph refillable pocket notebook. You can get them in leather or cloth and you can use theirs (which are great) or put a Field Notes in there. I put two notebooks in it, with the left cover holding one notebook, and the right cover the other. So its going to be just bigger than the Midori passport size notebooks.

But I think you may prefer one of those top wirebound notebooks, and the larger Clairefontaine "Pupitre" 5.7 x 8.2 inch ones would probably be up your alley,

I like the Rhodia pads, though I may order a Clairefontaine notebook as well to compare the two. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Good news Huizi... clairefontaine makes the paper for Rhodia.. they are the same company so unless you like some designs specific to one or the other... the paper is the same in both.

Goulet has small, pocket-sized Tomoe River notebooks; they're about the size and thickness of a passport. They're quite nice!

Residency? As in Hospital Doctor-ish Training School of Hard Knocks and Endless SLeep Deprivation?

Leave your fountain pen in your locker. If your attending/instructor/mentor imparts wisdom, you don't have time to whip out your notebook, flip to the bookmarked page, decide if you are conserving paper or if you need to start a new page, check all the lab coat's pockets for your fountain pen, uncap it, post the cap, and start writing.

Try researching "speed notes". An eveready ballpoint and any notebook that is large enough to hold comfortably to allow you to write quickly and legibly are the only primary components. At your leisure, but soon, review your speed notes and copy them into another notebook or into a computer.

My job sometimes requires a reporter's journaling skills. I prefer to use a reporter-style Moleskine and a mechanical pencil. The notebook is only an inexpensive tool for the job. I don't care how many notebooks I fill up; paper's so cheap as to be inconsequential compared to what I'm trying to accomplish with other people who are getting paid. I only use the lower, facing page. I write quickly and I write big. I have memorized a set of industry-specific abbreviations. I self-correct using strike-throughs. I highlight using underlines. I circle the best stuff. I fill and turn pages as fast as I can. I have two, sometimes more, writing instruments in case I drop one into the river or out of the bucket truck.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

It's going to get beaten up in your pocket, so I wouldn't recommend a spiral-bound because the wires can get bent out of shape.

I used a Kokuyo A6 Buncobon notebook because it was small, thick enough to not get thoroughly crushed, and inexpensive.

Consider taking such notes on index cards (which I presume are still used for patient info) and transferring them later into a notebook. You could highlight the edge of the card based on topic. They can be "bound" with a rubber band or a metal ring if you use a hole punch. Nicer paper won't remain that appealing after having been used in the hospital anyway.

Matt Armstrong's Inky Fingers pocket notebook. I have used pocket notebooks for 30 years, and these are my favorite. For any pen, including fps.

Pet peeve - I hate carrying around any notes that I'm done with, I like to remove & file away... whilst still having a fresh stack of pages to keep noting on. Hate bound books :)

I personally favour Lihitlabs reopen/closable system that allows their notebook to stay flipped over like a wirebound if necessary.

They come in many sizes, topflip B7 & sideflip B6 fits many pockets. I have B5s for desk & bag.

Japanese brand so their paper is pretty decent; or refill with your own. Holes are a common asian spacing, can buy your own punch if you're keen.

Apica CD5 or CD7 (same notebook, different colors) from Goulet Pens.

I find these more convenient than Clairfontaine as they're smaller and and fit more comfortably in my pockets.

Since the price of small notebooks are inexpensive, buy one from each recommended brand and see which one works best for you.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
