Blackstone Wild Orange (Scented)

This is the third of five reviews I'll be posting today and tomorrow - for one of six new inks about to be available from Just Write Pens / Blackstone Inks. These inks arrived last week - an unexpected birthday present! The 'Scents of Australia' inks are made from similar components to the already-available 'Colours of Australia' line, and share their properties, with one key difference: all six inks are scented, with odours evocative of the Australian 'aromascape'.

The 'Colours of Australia' inks are available in 30 and 60 ml bottles (reusable polypropylene) which I've found to be non-reactive and airtight. For the enthusiast, they're also available in 250 and 1000 ml bottles. Right now, I'm only aware of the smaller bottles for the 'Scents of Australia' line, but I guess we'll soon see!

Wild Orange is a darker, deeper shade of orange, as you'll see from the scan and photo below. I wouldn't call it a 'classic' orange - it ranges from a brownish orange in pens with less generous ink flow, to a dark burnt red. I really like the deep dark shade I get from my Fountain Pen Revolution flex pens! Thus far I haven't noticed any nib crud forming on my pens - but I haven't been using it for long enough, or in a wide enough range of pens, to be sure that won't be a problem.

Thanks Vis - a bit frustrating that I don't have the tools to get the colour exactly right - but I'd encourage anyone who's thinking of buying to check the swabs and samples provided by the distributors. According to the website (http://www.blackstone.ink/), Anderson Pens will be selling these in the US - and they've got a pretty comprehensive swab comparison setup there now...

I am loving these new scented inks.... I haven't had time to do my reviews yet, in summary I am quite please with them.

 

 

 

BTW... I haven't had any issues with my Colours of Australia line... .I have use them since they came out... (Blue reef and Sidney harbour are running out, and Uluru and Daintree are low).. no issues whatsoever. I wonder if it is a "weather" thing. Is it very hot where you are?

It gets hot here in summer - I honestly don't recall what season it was when my Daintree bottle was misbehaving, but it did settle down - after my first few draws were problematic, it's now problem-free. With the Uluru ink the tendency for the lubricant (I think - or some other component?) to kind of 'congeal' or 'string together' was fairly widespread - it didn't seem to affect every bottle or ever user, but it was a common enough complaint that it ultimately had to be reformulated.

 

Back to the new batch, though: I didn't expect to be bothered by the scents, one way or the other - but they're all very pleasant, and add to the enjoyment of writing with a well-formulated ink. Glad you're enjoying them - and will look forward to seeing your reviews come up online!

I do wonder about weather temperatures and such. Way back when, a group of us was testing the same inks (same batch)... the testers living in very hot climates seem to experience these problems.

ALSO... up here in CANADIA, a close friend left her inks beside a heater (during the winter months)... and these inks went bad (there were Diamine... nothing to do with Blackstone).

 

So, I am pretty sure that temperature do affect the composition of the inks. I keep mine on a dry/cold environment all year round, never had an issue.

 

 

 

BTW... it looks like I am the FIRST one to get the scented inks in North America... As far as I know, Uluru was the only ink that had to be reformulated - I know it wasn't a problem everywhere, but hadn't considered temperature as a factor.

 

Congratulations on getting the inks in - I understand the delay in release date (from May back to June) was to get sufficient stocks ready for worldwide distribution. Your Instagram pics look great (you've obviously got a better setup than me!) - will look forward to seeing a few reviews on FPN as well? I'm not much of an artist, and have the kind of handwriting that makes me think I missed my calling (shouldn't have dropped out of Med school...) - so I always enjoy seeing your more aesthetically pleasing contributions!

Well, I am perfectly fine with your handwriting & even happier that you were responsible for giving me my first introduction to these inks! I am signed up for notification @ Andersons for a bottle of the that wonderful Bush Green, you made possible for us to see. AND as long as I am paying for shipping, ONE bottle, I suspect there will be a few others of these inks, to keep the Bush Green company, for their second trip inside the US.

 

I have enjoyed the Uluru Red & have taken the advice of it's creator, "to give it a good shake, to send it back into suspension," without any issue. The first inks & I am sure these as well, are beautiful inks. Thank you for your introductions to them.

Blood Orange would be a great name, as far as colour is concerned - but blood oranges are not native Australian flora, hence (I believe) the reason for calling it Wild Orange instead!
