After 992, Jinhao Had 991

Well , look what I got in the TaoBao Ad ..

 

 

The ad say it will come in also solid colors of Black, Ivory, Apple Green, Neon Yellow, Orange, Yellow, and China Red .. but so far only the Demonstrator version in 0.5 ( standard nib ) version seems to be on offer , from the photo it look like the 992 nib unit was put into a slimmer, less build straight barrel with snap cap ( its also at a lower price ) ; personally I prefer the 992 styling better

I don't like that hooded nib, but I like the whole pen. Maybe the nib unit is screw type and can be swapped with the ones from Jinhao 992.

Not a fan of the new-style hooded nib (which is why I'm a huge fan of the JH911, TheBai Thyer, and WS613-2). Pity about the snap cap but the new barrel looks like it will be less likely to develop cracks so it may be a good alternative to the 992. They seem to share the same open nib.

 

As to the design I feel like it will look better in solid colours.

Thanks for the heads-up! How does it differ from the Thyer/improve on the 911? I remember seeing a custom 911 before that wasn't a Thyer but from what I could understand from the Chinese it advertised the exact same changes...

Many thanks for all the Chinese pens you are introducing us to. Despite living on the mainland, I just don't have to time to scour Taobao for new pens, so I greatly appreciate you doing so much of the work (my wife, on the other hand, isn't so thrilled ).

 

This pen looks pretty boring and ugly (like a Uni-ball Vision), but if it has the same nib as the 992 and no stupid plug to crack the barrel, I may give this one a shot.

 

I'm holding out for the "China Red" version...looks like a perfect grading pen.

Well, I did the deed....after looking carefully at the pictures for quite some time and finding that every color of this pen has a transparent piece on the top of the cap (instead of the color of the pen itself), I opted for the transparent coffee version.

I should have it in a week or so and will post my impressions as soon as I can.

This looks like a safer eyedropper candidate than the 992, but not nearly as attractive.

It's definitely slimmer than the 992, but there are plenty of even slimmer pens out there. The 991 has the exact same dimensions as a Uniball Vision rollerball. Regarding the step, it is very slight and the section is so long that I don't even notice it, which is saying something because I really hate steps.

Not another demonstrator in these colors - I have already more than I ever can/want to use - all the Yirens, Penton, Jinhao, WingSung. And they are so difficult to clean. It takes days until all the color has been washed out. (Or is Parker Quink Ble-Black a difficult color?)

When will they take some risk and make some "new" colors - something like this one here Link to Ebay.

Just got a batch of these with the hooded .38mm nib. Very nice pens actually, along the lines of my Jinhao 911s in writing quality and quite a bit lighter. They look to do well as an eyedropper (better than the 992 I'd say) although I haven't tried it yet.

I like Uni-Balls and I like snap caps. I've been looking at buying some cheap pens for trying out new inks (who knows how they'll behave), and have been looking at Hero 1202 (it is a Pilot 78g clone, and I'm not a fan of this design; plus it has some kind of a non-standard (and unspecified) converter) and Jinhao 992 (turned out to have cracking issues). I guess I finally found my cheap pen poison with this pen. Will get several transparent and green ones. Thanks to the OP for the review.

Unfortunately my initial test of this pen has taken a turn for the worse. My first 991 in use cracked in the cap, barrel AND section! Never had that happen with another pen before. I'm not judging the entire line based on a single pen, this one may have just been a poor build. Testing another one and have given one to a friend who is a valet and uses pens in more harsh circumstances than I do, we'll see how well these ones fare up.

Yeah I'm hoping its just a fluke. Your response is very comforting though. I've bought enough Jinhaos now to get the occasional fail-pen but on the whole I've been very impressed with the build versus the price.

I've successfully eyedroppered several of these (the threading is long enough that silicone goo alone is sufficient - no O ring required), and have had three filled with BSB, Kung Te Cheng, and Mrs. Stuart's Laundry Bluing respectively for about a month, with everything trouble-free.
