Off the top of my head: Doyou, Shigure, Kobe 51, and if you like Noodler's, Squeteague or Zhivago. J. Herbin Poussiere de Lune might meet your "not too purple" category.

Thanks again for all the suggestions, everyone! Keep 'em coming!

I stopped by a local pen shop today and picked up a bottle of Private Reserve Ebony Purple. I've been writing with it a bit this afternoon (TWSBI Mini, Medium) and I like it a lot!

Pelikan 4001 Blue Black

Diamine Blue Black

Noodler's 54th Massachusetts

Noodler's Black

Diamine Sherwood Green

Diamine Merlot - a dark red that when smudged leans toward purple

Blackstone Sydney Harbour Blue

Blackstone Barrier Reef Blue - both of these sheen, are pretty dark, although BRB is brighter and do shade some, but not anything like Apache Sunset, as the start out much darker.

You'd probably like most of my picks for The Six Essential Inks (see the Inky Journey link in my signature).

  • Black: Noodler's Heart of Darkness. If I make my Dad's "51" or my Sheaffer PFM-II into my Pen for Black, then I might go for Noodler's 4001 Brilliant Black instead.
  • Blue-Black: I'm leaning towards Pilot Blue-Black (and if I was a one ink one pen kind of guy, this could easily be the ink, and Dad's "51" the pen), but you already have Noodler's Air Corps Blue Black that you like.
  • Purple: I plan to try Noodler's original Purple; if it behaves itself, then it will be The Essential Purple. I considered Diamine Bilberry Damson, too. It's a very dark, blue-leaning purple with excellent fade resistance.
  • Blue: I really like Noodler's original Blue because it's so cyan and has so little purple, and it's nothing like a ballpoint blue. There are a lot of great blues out there.
  • Green: Diamine Sherwood. I like my Essentials to be unmistakably members of their respective color families, but also dark enough for ready legibility. Sherwood is a rather dark green, but could never be mistaken for anything but a green. With a fine, dry pen, this might be too pale for your taste.
  • Brown: Noodler's original Brown is my current lead candidate. Noodler's Walnut and Iroshizuku Yama-Guri are both very dark browns, but a bit greenish for my taste.

I use Noodler's Red-Black quite a bit too; it was a gift. It is highly legible, distinctive, doesn't feather on basic copy paper from my wet-writing Pelikan M200, doesn't shade much, doesn't fade, and the black component doesn't run when wet.

You should definitely check out the Inky TOD Color Swatch threads.

If you're a fan of Noodle's Air Corp, I'd like to suggest their bulletproof black (rich, dark, even black), and 54th Mass (dark, even midnight bluish). These are my favorite inks and sometimes I have a hard time choosing between the three of them.

Diamine Oxford Blue is the darkest ink I own (besides blacks) and happens to be on of my favorite go-to daily inks.

Diamine Bilberry for purple, Majestic Blue for...blue. Great colours. Diamine Green black is ok. Asa blue is a nice mid-range blue (with a bit of green?)

Quick dip pen comparison of some of darker inks I have, with Red Dragon you already have, to help with putting in the prospective (and colour adjustment). Few have already been mentioned in previous posts.

Missing Diamine Imperial Purple here (only in cartridges, no pen inked with at the moment).

Majestic Blue does not show very accurate here due to it s red sheen, in reality it is much deeper supersaturated blue.

I hadn't thought about it, I guess most of my inks are not dark, maybe a reaction to having started with only blue-black and black... Verdigris is awesome, doesn't get darker than Perle Noire. Maybe Yama Guri can be considered dark.

Boy, this is a thread I can get behind; I also tend to like the dark saturated colors although I don't mind some shading. I'm really liking the ideas that have been thrown out there and I'm putting them on my sample wish list. With all the samples I have, I have found that the J Herbins and Pilot Iroshizuku's in general just aren't saturated enough for me in my Decimo F nib. I am quite fond, however, of most Sailor inks as they seem to really work well for me.

But, what I have, have used, and like are darker and saturated are Diamine Damson, Sailor Rikyu Cha, Sailor Blue Black, Sailor Chu Shu, Sailor Yama Dori, Noodler's Liberty's Elysium, Kobe #51, and yes even the new Lamy Petrol which I just put in my first cartridge last night.

Best of luck in you hunt

Pelikan Dark Green just sneaked in the side door.

Not real DARK, but darker than the standard mid tones.

It looks nice in my Parker Vac and writes well. Nice enough that I think I will get another bottle...or two.

My darkest ink other than black, is KWZ Dark Brown which has a grey undertone which I really like. I use it for extensive writing as it is readable, easy on the eyes and well behaved.

Pens: Conid Kingsize ebonite (x2)
Inks:
KWZ Dark Brown / KWZ IG Orange / Diamine Chocolate / Diamine Burnt Sienna / Diamine Ochre / Monteverde Scotch Brown

Private Reserve Ebony Purple is a beautiful dark ink. Think of the peel of a very dark eggplant.

PR makes my favorite dark inks.

Black Cherry

Ebony Green

Electric DC Blue (Ebony Blue is darker)

I actually prefer PR over Bungubox & Iroshizuku

I like Iroshizuku Tsukushi.

it has a nice hint of red in darker brown :)

Dream, take one step at a time and achieve. :)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
